Job Summary

As the Assistant Director of Marketing, Communications & Digital Engagement, this role plays a pivotal part in NEC’s Marketing, Communications, and External Relations team. Reporting to the Director of Content Strategy and Data Analytics, the position oversees NEC’s digital engagement strategy, ensuring a cohesive and compelling brand presence across social media, web, email, and digital advertising. Responsibilities include developing high-impact digital campaigns, leveraging analytics to optimize performance, and engaging diverse audiences. Collaboration with internal and external partners is essential to enhance NEC’s digital storytelling, grow engagement, and support institutional priorities.

This hybrid role allows for a combination of remote and work on NEC’s Boston campus; however, during the first three months, the position will require on-campus presence at least four days per week to ensure a smooth onboarding and integration with the team.

Essential Functions

Develop and execute a comprehensive digital engagement strategy that supports NEC’s brand, recruitment, and external relations goals.

Oversee multi-channel content strategies, ensuring alignment across social media, website, email marketing, and paid digital campaigns.

Lead NEC’s flagship social media presence, managing content strategy, performance analytics, and audience engagement.

Serve as an advisor on emerging digital trends and best practices, recommending innovative approaches to enhance NEC’s online presence.

Direct and implement the digital strategy for NEC’s Expanded Education program, ensuring effective engagement and outreach.

Manage paid social media and digital advertising efforts, optimizing campaigns to maximize reach and impact.

Supervise and mentor 1-2 student workers, providing guidance on digital content development and audience engagement.

Collaborate with content creators, influencers, and partners across the department and NEC to drive digital storytelling initiatives.

Analyze performance data to refine strategies and inform leadership on digital engagement trends.

Lead and facilitate campus-wide social media meetings and digital engagement collaborations.

Oversee the production of NEC’s internal email marketing campaigns, ensuring content is accurate and accessible.

Serve as a primary website editor, implementing content updates and working with stakeholders to enhance user experience and SEO.

Contribute to strategic marketing initiatives that support NEC’s institutional priorities.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Business, or a related field.

At least 3 years of experience in marketing, communications, or digital engagement, preferably in a higher education, nonprofit, or arts / music industry setting.

Demonstrated experience developing and executing digital engagement strategies, including social media, email marketing, and web content.

Strong understanding of digital analytics, audience insights, and performance optimization for social and digital campaigns.

Proficiency in content creation and storytelling, with experience managing multi-channel campaigns.

Experience with social media strategy, community management, and engagement best practices across Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), LinkedIn, TikTok, and emerging platforms.

Working knowledge of paid digital advertising (Facebook / Instagram ads, Google Ads, etc.).

Basic graphic design skills (Adobe Creative Suite, Canva) and video editing experience (preferred but not required).

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with a strong grasp of brand voice, messaging, and editorial standards.

Strong project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and juggle multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

Ability to collaborate across departments and lead digital initiatives with internal and external stakeholders.

Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, demonstrating initiative, problem-solving skills, and a team-oriented mindset.
