JOB TITLE: Certified Peer Support Worker (CPSW) Program Coordinator

LOCATION: Western New Mexico Correctional Facility, Grants, NM

WAGE: Competitive, based on education and experience $48,000-$65,000 per annum

WORK HOURS: Variable eight hours per day scheduled at the discretion of the Reentry Director

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD) is seeking a motivated individual to initiate and build out a sustainable Certified Peer Support Worker (CPSW) program within the walls of the New Mexico Corrections Department (NMCD). The Office of Peer Recovery & Engagement (OPRE) through the Behavioral Health Services Division (BHSD) of the New Mexico Health Care Authority offers a training program for individuals seeking certification as a Certified Peer Support Worker (CPSWs). The CPSW is an integral and highly valued member of a multi-disciplinary team helping people in their recovery.

The selected candidate will support program creation, development and implementation in collaboration between NMCD and HCA/OPRE, complete CPSW trainings with offenders, monitor and keep record of training hours, and assist sites with the appropriate and safe use of CPSWs at their sites. The ideal candidate is technically proficient with software platforms, has excellent written and verbal communication skills, and works well with the incarcerated population, NMCD staff, and third-party individuals. This position with be based out of Grants, NM, but will involve statewide travel, to include travel to Santa Fe, NM to meet OPRE staff as needed.

The selected candidate will partner with the OPRE liaison to become versed in the CPSW curriculum and equipped to train CPSWs. The CPSW training is 40 hours of classroom time over the course of 5 days and covers topics such as professionalism, ethics, components of recovery and resiliency, mental health, and substance use disorders, building communication skills, stress management, and supportive housing.

The position receives a retirement pension plan through the Educational Retirement Board, medical, vision, dental, sick leave, and generous amounts of personal leave.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

· High School diploma, GED certification or equivalent is required.

· Must be a CPSW in good standing, or eligible to become a CPSW within six months of contracting with NMCD. One (1) year of professional level experience related to the duties of the position which could include teaching, training, group facilitation, and/or involved in community program operations.

· A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in a related social services, psychology, or counseling field will qualify you for the position in place of the required one (1) year professional level experience.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

· 90% indoor – 10% outdoor. Work is done inside the perimeter of an adult prison environment and in a variety of settings in a correctional institution, and includes daily contact with and supervision of inmates, sometimes one-on-one, and is potentially a very dangerous environment. Work is performed in an office and classroom setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer usage. Some travel may be required.

WORK PACE:

50% rapid pace to meet deadlines – 50% at own pace

Essential Duties:

  • Complete an approved Train the trainer program in order to be able to train offenders to become CPSW’s.
  • Initiate and coordinate applications to the CPSW program.
  • Facilitate dates and the environment for CPSW trainings in coordination with the Office of Peer Recovery and Engagement (OPRE).
  • Facilitate on-the job training at WNMCF with the unit management team.
  • Facilitate on-going CEU training for CPSW’s statewide.
  • Monitor CPSW certification and CEU’s needed to maintain certification for the individuals in NMCD. Facilitate any training needed across all state correctional facilities for CPSW purposes.
  • Meet with HCA/OPRE at regular intervals for program development and maintenance. Meetings to occur virtually or in person. Frequency and platform to be determined upon hire.
  • Arrange vetting schedule and interviews with each successful applicant. OPRE to support vetting process through initial stages of the program.
  • Work in Collaboration with the Reentry and Behavioral Health Divisions of NMCD in program implementation and operations.
  • Provide logistical and technological support needed to staff, CPSW’s, and CPSW candidates.
  • Will maintain data collection for identified CPSW’s throughout their time in NMCD and throughout supervision to ensure they are able to pursue being a CPSW after release.
  • Ability to handle multiple demands and demonstrate flexibility with changes.
  • Establish and maintain an effective and engaging learning environment, appropriate to the needs and capacities of staff.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with Central Administration staff and facility administration, staff, incarcerated individuals, visitors, and the general public.
  • Ensure security of staff and incarcerated population by maintaining professionalism, ethical behavior, and situational awareness while interacting with incarcerated individuals.
  • Oversee the preparation of reports as required by policy, regulations and procedure.
  • Use verbal and written communication in an open, candid and consistent manner; explain concepts and procedures clearly and completely while maintaining attention and interest; displays sensitivity to the unique needs of NMCD’s population.
  • Follows all federal and state laws and regulations, Corrections Department and Health Care Authority Policies.
  • Perform related duties as required and assigned.
  • NMCD retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position.

Employment Requirements:

  • This position is designated as safety sensitive.
  • Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S and have reached the age of majority.
  • Willingness to work under potentially dangerous circumstances in a correctional facility and maintain strict fidelity to security protocols.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Will have a NM CPSW licensure in good standing for (4) years.
  • Is able to coordinate and support new trainers and identify ongoing training needs for peers throughout NMCD.
  • Is able to support the creation, development and implementation of relevant training programs that will prepare peers for the next steps of their careers.
  • Will work closely with the designated OPRE staff person to ensure the success of this program.

All of the above must be done in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
