The Newtown Library Company (NLC) is a primarily volunteer run organization that has been serving Newtown since 1760. It is the oldest, subscription-based, private library in historic Bucks County, PA.

Job Summary:

The NLC seeks a dynamic individual to manage its day-to-day operations while expanding its reach within the community. This position combines the responsibilities of library management with strategic outreach initiatives to ensure the library's continued growth and relevance.

Job Responsibilities:

Library Operations:

  • Help oversee the daily operations of the library, including material cataloging, collection management, and vendor coordination;
  • Manage volunteer resources and assign tasks in coordination with the Board of Directors;
  • Ensure the maintenance of library software systems and respond to technical needs;
  • Provide comprehensive library statistics and updates to the Board of Directors; and
  • Other duties as necessary.

Community Engagement:

  • Act as the NLC’s primary liaison with the community, fostering relationships with local businesses, schools, and organizations;
  • Develop and execute programs such as reading series (i.e. 1000 books before Kindergarten, Tuesday story hour), author events, and special exhibits tailored to community interests;
  • Promote the library's services through PR, marketing, and social media outreach;
  • Identify opportunities for partnerships and funding, including initiating and managing grant-writing projects; and
  • Other duties as needed.

Leadership and Governance:

  • Attend and actively participate in Board of Director meetings and sub-committee sessions;
  • Collaborate with the Board and committees to implement the library’s policies, procedures, and annual budget;
  • Address and act on Board meeting action items promptly; and
  • Other duties as needed.

Job Qualifications:

  • ALA-Accredited MS in Library and Information Science preferred;
  • Professional experience in library operations, project management, and community outreach;
  • Proficiency in MS Office and library management software;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills;
  • Website maintenance experience is a plus;
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds;
  • Must be able to navigate stairs and utilize a step ladder;
  • Must be able to bend and reach to access books on high and low shelves;
  • Creative thinker with leadership qualities;
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a kind and approachable demeanor; and
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.

Details:

  • Hours: 15-20 hours per week.
  • Compensation: $20-25 per hour based on experience.
  • Vacation: 2 weeks annually.
  • Benefits: Not included.
  • Performance Evaluations: Initial review after 90 days; biannual reviews thereafter.
  • Direct Supervisor: Board President; accountable to all Board members.

Other Requirements:

PA State Child Abuse History and Criminal Record clearances as required by PA state law upon employment as well as the Federal (FBI) Criminal History Report.
