Staff Counsel, Regulatory Affairs

Hybrid, Washington, D.C.


Position overview: Under the direction of the General Counsel, manage internal trade association operations and U.S. federal regulatory affairs. The role is a critical contributor to the success of the Legal & Regulatory Department.

What you'll do:


Internal operations

  • Draft and review contracts and agreements for the association.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of internal staff policies.
  • Coordinate with the General Counsel on litigation management.
  • Plan and staff the annual Legal & Regulatory Conference and other events as directed.


Federal regulatory affairs

  • Analyze new federal legislation and regulations to assess potential impacts on the cosmetics and personal care products industry.
  • Assist in developing regulatory comments on proposed rulemaking under the Modernization of Cosmetics Regulation Act (MoCRA).
  • Respond to member inquiries regarding product claims and labeling.
  • Act as staff liaison to various committees and task forces.


What you'll need to succeed (requirements)

  • Juris Doctorate and active DC, Virginia, or Maryland Bar membership and 3–5 years of experience as a regulatory, environmental, or litigation attorney.
  • Familiarity with federal food & drug law or similarly regulated consumer goods (preferred).
  • Strong presentation and public speaking skills.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to achieve consensus among diverse stakeholders.
  • Sound judgment and confidentiality.
  • Proficiency in MS Office.
  • Hybrid work schedule: Must be available to work in the DC office at least two days per week.
  • Flexibility for occasional overnight travel up to 15%.
