Salary Grade: NC04 / Salary Range: $31,200.00 - $52,813.00 - All recommended salaries are based on each applicant’s qualifying education and related experience in combination with the position’s budgeted salary. The maximum hiring rate for this position is $44,563.
This is an extended posting through December 6, 2024, for Transportation Worker I positions in Division 1, Gates County. Multiple Transportation Worker I positions will be filled from each extended county posting. Interested applicants will only have to apply one time to be considered for all our Transportation Worker I vacancies in each respective county during this time frame. However, if an applicant is interested in applying for a Transportation Worker I position in more than one county, they will need to apply to each respective county posting for which they are seeking employment. These are permanent NCDOT positions with full benefits including health insurance, retirement, vacation and sick leave, etc.
Work in this class primarily involves the operation of standard hand tools, power equipment, vehicles, and heavy equipment utilized in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of roads and roadside features for the State’s highway and roadway systems. Other duties include inspecting, ensuring work zone safety, and participating in snow & ice removal.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
- Experience operating power tools such as chainsaw, weed eater, skill saw, drill, compactor, jackhammer, etc. and/or using small hand tools such as shovels, rakes, brooms, post hole diggers, hammer, screwdriver, torch, etc.
- Experience performing manual labor
Additional Expectations:
Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Safety toe footwear is needed.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school education General Educational Development Diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Requirements
Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
