Responsibilities & Qualifications

The Novelis Kennesaw R&D team is seeking an AI & Advanced Modeling Co-op. The person in this role will report to the Sr. Modeling Scientist in the AI & Advanced Modeling team within New Domains Pillar (part of Novelis Global R&D). The ideal candidate will be responsible for generating experimental data that will be used to calibrate phase transformation models aimed at optimizing heat treatment cycle for high-recycle content alloys. The candidate will play a key role in developing modeling tools that will accelerate deployment of high-recycle content alloys that will enable Novelis to meet sustainability objectives. This co-op will begin May 2025 and end December 2025.

Responsibilities:

• Perform extensive lab-scale heat treatment tests that mimic industrial annealing steps using high-recycle content aluminum alloys
• Analyze microstructure (grain structure, phase transformation) of sheet samples using SEM/EBSD
• Perform mechanical testing of sheet samples
• Perform CALPHAD calculations to validate model prediction with experiments
• Organize experimental data to be used for model calibration
• Communicate results with team members (oral and written)

Minimum Qualifications:

• At least Senior Undergraduate in Materials Science & Engineering. Masters and PhD students preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with heat treatment and mechanical testing of metallic alloys
• Experience with SEM/EBSD
• Experience with CALPHAD software and python scripting
