BACKGROUND
Nutrition Service Company (“NSC” or the “Company”) is a leading producer of custom feed blends for dairy cattle and processed soybean products. NSC is headquartered in Pulaski, WI, and has six additional facilities. Production capabilities include grain storage, grain drying, feed production, and soybean processing. The Company has 90 employees.
NSC was acquired in June 2021 by Benford Capital Partners (“Benford Capital” or “BCP”). Since 2004, BCP, a Chicago-based, operationally oriented private equity investment firm, has focused on buying and building leading lower middle market companies in partnership with founders and management. Since inception, Benford Capital has acquired 50 companies, including several add-on acquisitions, and currently owns 16 platform companies.
POSITION OVERVIEW
We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Controller to join the finance team at NSC. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, with significant interaction at the NSC management level, this highly experienced, results driven Controller position will play a key role helping the Company execute its long-term growth strategy. The Controller will support the leadership team in all aspects of financial management, including: compliance with accounting standards, business planning and budgeting, development of metrics to drive performance improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or related field
- 5-10 years of accounting experience
- CPA license is preferred, but not required
- Strong knowledge of financial management principles and practices
- Proficiency in forecasting techniques and budgeting processes
- Expertise in account reconciliation and balance sheet reconciliation
- Excellent financial report writing skills, with attention to detail
- Familiarity with payroll processes and compliance requirements
- In-depth knowledge of GAAP standards, costing, and inventory management
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data
- Ability to take initiative and work independently
- Effective leadership skills to manage and develop team members
- Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders
- Proficient with advanced features of Microsoft Office software products (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint)
- Experience with iRely ERP a plus
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Prepare, review, and approve journal entries, reconciliations, and month-end close processes to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting in compliance with GAAP
- Assist with the preparation of monthly financial reporting packages to support internal decision-making and to meet all required third-party reporting requirements
- Support the budgeting process, including forecasting and variance analysis to identify trends and opportunities
- Ensure timely payroll processing and compliance with relevant regulations
- Prepare comprehensive financial reports for management review, highlighting key performance indicators
- Play an active role in the external financial audit process
- Supervise accounts receivable processes to optimize cash flow and minimize outstanding debts
- Collaborate with other departments to provide financial insights that support business decisions
- Support special projects as needed, such as ERP implementation, M&A diligence and integration support
- Collaborate closely with the CFO to build a finance department grounded in operational support, financial expertise and a culture of continuous improvement
