Job Description
A professional nurse prepared at the Baccalaureate or higher level that collaborates with the Director of Nursing for Staff Development in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating orientation and continuing education programs, both at the unit and at the department level. She/he serves as a role model and a resource person for the nursing staff. She/he assumes 24 hours responsibility for staff development and practice in assigned areas in collaboration with unit management.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
- Identifies and utilizes specific learning needs prior to designing education sessions/programs.
- Interprets staff learning needs to the line managers, engaging staff support for needed offerings.
- Develops appropriate behavioral objectives and content outline on a timely manner.
- Utilizes current nursing/medical literature during preparation.
- Plans educational calendar according to the specific needs of the assigned areas.
- Utilizes principles of adult teaching-learning process during classroom/clinical activities.
- Demonstrates knowledge of various teaching methodologies.
- Selects and uses appropriate audiovisual aides to enhance the learning process.

- Creates an environment conducive to learning.
- Evaluates effectiveness of educational programs/training sessions on a timely basis.
- Reports results of the evaluation process and makes the necessary revision to the program/offering.
- Maintains records for classes given on a timely basis and maintains an accurate and complete educational record for each nursing personnel in the assigned clinical area.
- Provides statistical reports on educational activities to the appropriate individual.
- Interprets the organizational/network goals, mission, vision and policies to the staff while providing knowledge and skills required for their successful implementation.
- Fosters a climate which promotes open communication and professional/career growth for nursing staff.
- Facilitates the process for learners to assume responsibility for maintaining competency in their clinical practice.
- Facilitates the initiation and adoption of changes in nursing practice and organization.
- Assists the staff, middle management group and other disciplines for consultation on role development, development of policies and procedures, protocols and standards, job performance and clinical, educational and leadership activities.
- Submits educational activity schedule and monthly progress report of these activities to the Director of staff development.
- Coordinates when necessary, in service for new equipment, products and skills for staff of assigned area of responsibility.
- Assist Directors of Nursing in maintaining current educational profiles for nursing staff.
Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA); and
3. A Master’s Degree in Nursing, or a related nursing or education field, from an accredited college or university; and
4. Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse in specialty area(s), including:
a. One (1) year providing nursing education and training in specialty area(s); or
b. Holds a valid and current certification as a Nurse Educator.
For Assignment to Nurse Educator Level II
1. In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of Nurse Educator Level I, must be assigned to a highly specialized area (e.g., critical care, emergency services, perioperative care) or to a group of specialty areas.
