Description
As part of the OdySea Aquarium senior leadership team, this position oversees the HR department and develops and implements HR policies and programs. The main responsibility is to set, enforce, and evaluate legally compliant human resources polices, procedures, and best practices, while identifying and implementing long-range strategic talent management goals. The Director Human Resources will represent OdySea Aquarium by leading a team which emulates the mission, vision, and core values of the organization, emphasizing strong educational and conservation messaging, and delivering excellence in guest service.
Requirements
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborates with senior leadership to understand the organization's goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention.
- Plans, organizes and directs the activities of the Human Resources Department which may include recruitment and selection, classification and compensation, employee benefits, organizational development and training, employee relations, affirmative action, and risk management.
- Applies professional knowledge and personal judgment in the oversight of operations within the Human Resources Department.
- Monitors and ensures the organization's compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews and modifies policies and practices to maintain compliance.
- Effectively negotiates with key officials within and outside the company and successfully defend official positions on a broad range of human resources related issues.
- Creates and manages the budget for the human resource department.
- Ensuring that every aspect of human resources incorporates the vision, values, and culture of OdySea Aquarium.
- Managing the risk management work functions and assisting in developing a healthy and safety program for the volunteers and team members.
- Maintains team member benefits programs and informs team members of benefits by studying and assessing benefit needs and trends; recommending benefit programs to management; obtaining and evaluating benefit contract bids; designing and conducting educational programs on benefit programs.
- Leadership – The ability to coach, guide, mentor, inspire and motivate others to perform well and accepts feedback from others.
- Communicates with legal counsel for any complaints, lawsuits, employment agreements, etc.
- Ensure legal compliance by monitoring and implementing applicable human resource tribal, federal, and state requirements; conduct investigations; maintaining records; representing the organization at hearings.
- Maintains historical human resource records by designing a filing and retrieval system, keeping past and current records.
- Perform all other duties as required.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources or related field with relevant course work (related work experience may be substituted)
- 8 to 12 years related to Human Resources experience, with 5 years in Human Resources supervisory position; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Heavy Generalist background, multi-state and multi-site location experience
- SPHR/PHR Certification preferred.
- Proven ability to design and implement corporate workforce planning, restructuring, and management practices, techniques, and evaluation methodologies.
- Knowledge of employment laws such as EEO, COBRA, FMLA, ADA and FLSA.
- Solid problem-solving and business acumen skills.
- The ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations, demonstrates group presentation skills and conducts meetings.
- Ability to adapt to the needs of the organization and employees.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and to delegate them when appropriate.
- Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations.
