Position Summary:
The Academic Advisor is responsible for assisting new freshmen and transfer students with degree and course selection, outlining appropriate educational plans, clarifying academic and long-term goals, improving decision-making skills, evaluating degree progression, and discovering additional resources designed to enhance their collegiate experience. As a member of the Student Success Office, the Academic Advisor will help students have a productive and rewarding college experience, and to maximize students' potential success. The Academic Advisor will assist new students as they transition into and through the University with the goals of improving academic success and retention rates.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide academic advising for new students.
- Monitor advisee academic performance and provide interventions to improve academic success.
- Educate students about online course information and registration (i.e. PantherLearn, ODU Online)
- Assist in developing advising initiatives and academic programming specifically for first-year and transfer students.
- Maintain regularly scheduled office hours for advising and registration services with some evening and weekend availability expected.
- Serve as an Early Alert system case worker and collaborate with student support services (Academic Resource Center, Student Counseling, etc.) to provide assistance to students.
- Collaborate with University faculty and staff to provide targeted outreach.
- Assist with faculty advisor training.
- Conduct mid-term, probation, and reinstatement interventions to develop academic strategies for students.
- Recognize students who achieve academic success.
- Work with student athletes and coaches to establish individual achievement plans.
- Present to and meet with prospective students and their guests during admission recruitment events.
- Participate in new student orientation activities as assigned.
- Assist with selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of office work-study students.
- Offer time management and basic study strategy workshops to various student groups.
- Attend meetings, trainings, and conferences (occasional road travel required).
- Support the role and function of the Executive Director of Student Success.
- Any other duties as needed and/or requested.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required with a Master's degree preferred in Higher Education or a related field and a minimum of two years' work experience in higher education, particularly in the area of academic advising or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, writing, and presentation skills, and must be detail-oriented.
- Committed to helping students achieve success with a high level of professionalism and integrity.
- Proficient with MS word processing, Excel spreadsheets.
- Able to utilize computerized registration systems (Datatel and Colleague) and degree audit interpretation are also required for this position.
- Able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing as to work requirements, work in progress, work completion and status of departmental goals.
- Communicate verbally and in writing with co-workers, members of management, faculty and students.
- Able to utilize active listening skills to ascertain areas of need, define problems, and determine possible solutions to meet expressed needs.
- Demonstrate leadership, tact, diplomacy, professionalism and a positive demeanor in performance of all duties.
