The Department of Theatre at Oklahoma State University invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Scenic Design to begin fall 2025. The successful candidate must be highly dedicated to undergraduate research, teaching, and mentoring. They will teach design production elements and technical theatre courses from a dynamic intercultural perspective and possess a profound commitment to the collaborative artistic process.
The Oklahoma State University Department of Theatre offers undergraduate programs that immerse students in the theatrical arts through high-quality teaching, research, and outreach. The department provides a comprehensive BA in Theatre, a BFA in Acting, and a BFA in Musical Theatre. Through enriching experiences, we ignite students' passion for the performing arts and empower them to become versatile artists, leaders, and visionaries.
Responsibilities:
Teach undergraduate courses in design and technology, including design principles, scenic art, properties, portfolio development, and practicum courses.
Collaborate with other faculty members and production teams to integrate and provide evocative and innovative scenic designs for theatrical productions and interdisciplinary projects.
Mentor and advise students in their design projects, providing constructive feedback and guidance throughout the creative process.
Head the design, creation, and application of scenery, properties, and scenic art for department theatrical productions and interdisciplinary projects.
Stay current with advancements and research in scenic design technology and techniques and incorporate relevant updates into the curriculum.
Participate in departmental meetings and other activities while adhering to guidelines and deadlines that contribute to the overall growth and development of the theatre program.
Engage in service-related initiatives to benefit the university, professional endeavors, and the local community.
Required qualifications:
MFA in Theatrical Design and Technology or a related area of study
Evidence of high-quality creative research with a trajectory of building a national profile.
Evidence of successful college or university-level teaching and mentorship
Portfolio of professional scenic design work and experience that showcases creative vision and originality.
Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Vectorworks, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively mentor and collaborate with students and colleagues.
