What are the responsibilities and job description for the Classes Instructor position at OMSI - Oregon Museum of Science & Industry?
The Classes Instructor is responsible for conducting week-long, topic specific, grade blocked (K-9th), STEAM classes. The instructor delivers and modifies hands-on curriculum ensuring students are safely supervised and engaged. This position also communicates within the Classes team and to families while following written procedures.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- Delivers engaging week-long STEAM curriculum for students in grades K-9;
- Supervises students to ensure a safe, fun, and engaging environment for up to 24 students;
- Communicates effectively with students, caregivers, co-workers, and supervisors about programming expectations and procedures;
- Communicates with community organizations and other outside contacts;
- Prepares and organizes classroom to facilitate an effective learning environment;
- Actively integrates diversity, equity, access, and inclusion across their work.
Working Conditions
- This position is non-exempt, paid hourly;
- This position is a special project, full-time scheduled for 40 hours/week;
- This position is scheduled to work June 1, 2025 - August 30, 2025.
- This position requires working onsite at the museum location;
- Ability to bend, stoop, crawl, and sit on the floor multiple times a day;
- Physical Demands: 50% sitting, 10% standing, 40% lifting/carrying/pushing up to 50 lbs.;
- Vision Demands include:
- Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches of less)
- Distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more)
- Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors)
- Peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left or right while eyes are fixed on a given point)
- Depth and perception (three dimensional vision, ability to judge distance and spatial relationships)
- Ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus)
- Environmental Demands include:
- Wet or humid conditions (non-weather)
- Work near moving mechanical parts
- Work in high, precarious places
- Toxic or caustic chemicals
- Risk of electric shock
- Noise Levels include:
- Very quiet (examples: forest trail, isolation booth for hearing test)
- Quiet (examples: library, private office)
- Moderate (examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic)
- Loud (examples: metal can manufacturing department, large earth-moving equipment)
- Very loud (examples: jack hammer work, front row at rock concert)
Secondary Job Responsibilities
Secondary responsibilities include-but are not limited to-the following:
- Provide first aid care to participants and staff when necessary;
- Provide classroom and peer support.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
REQUIREMENTS:
- Comfortable leading groups of students;
- Strong facilitation and presentation skills;
- Demonstrated ability to pivot between individual and team work;
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products;
- Exercises sound judgment while upholding high integrity and ethical standards;
- Strong interpersonal, verbal, and communication skills that adhere to confidentiality, protocol, and community agreements.
PREFERENCES:
- Developed knowledge of diversity, equity, and inclusion principles;
- Proficient or native fluency in a second language (non-English).
Education & Work Experience
REQUIREMENTS:
- Combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree;
- Prior classroom, enrichment, or youth engagement experience;
- Demonstrated experience or ability to work in a fast-paced environment, often with stringent and overlapping time constraints;
- Demonstrated experience or ability to work effectively with people of diverse backgrounds and talents in a professional work environment.
PREFERENCES:
- Demonstrated experience working in a STEAM education-based environment.
