Overview

The Nurse Manager is responsible and accountable on a 24-hour basis for the delivery of Nursing Care directly or indirectly for individual residents from admission to discharge. The Nurse Manager maintains the quality of resident care through an on-going process of assessment, planning, implementation and the supervision of comprehensive services. In addition, the Nurse Manager is responsible for Performance Improvement Activities, Infection Control, and Staff Education and for administrative decisions relating to the daily operation of his/her unit.

Responsibilities

Nurse Management:

  • Participates in determining the conditions, resources and policies essential to the delivery of comprehensive care.
  • Contributes to the development, implementation and evaluation of standards of nursing practice.
  • Supervises and assists with the development, implementation and evaluation of the nursing regiment for residents in collaboration with the appropriate members of the health care team.
  • Monitors the delivery of nursing care and the outcomes of nursing interventions through daily rounds on the assigned units.
  • Communicates with staff on all shifts through bi-weekly meetings.
  • Ensures continuity of resident care through daily communication with Administrative nursing Care Coordinators on the other shifts.
  • Interacts with resident, families and significant others to promote resident well-being and resolve conflicts.
  • Recommends, participates in, and evaluates the effectiveness of the in-service education program with the Nursing Department.
  • Interprets and communicates Schulman and Schachne policies and procedures to the staff, residents, families/significant other.
  • Assumes responsibility for leadership in Interdisciplinary Care Planning meeting. 

Educator, Consultant and Clinical Resource:

  • Teaches patients, resident and / or families to promote optimum level of wellness.
  • Develop patient/resident teaching guideline specific to residents’ learning needs. Participates in resident and family education.
  • Conducts formal and informal educational program for staff.
  • Acts as a consultant and clinical resource to staff, to develop, implement and evaluate care plans for particular patient/residents and families.
  • Collaborates with the Staff Educator in planning educational programs for staff.
  • Assists the Staff Educator in orientation of professional and non-professional staff and evaluate staff performance;
  • Responsible for maintaining or augmenting the quality of life of the residents.
  • Ensures all staff adheres to the patient/residents Bill of Rights.
  • Makes daily clinical rounds with staff as well as with the Director of Nursing/Associate Director of Nursing.
  • Participates in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement. Monitor finding and makes recommendations to Performance Improvement Teams.
  • Develops implements and evaluates nursing rehabilitative/restorative programs on his his/her caseload of resident/patients in conjunction with the Department of Rehabilitation.
  • Ensures accurate documentation in clinical records.
  • Assures that all patient/resident referrals are submitted to appropriate health care discipline.

 

Administrative Roles:

  • Demonstrates commitment to the mission and vision of the organization.
  • Implements facility and departmental and organizational policies.
  • Establishes and maintains effective interdepartmental communication.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in implementing NYSDOH Standards.
  • Provides directions and planning of staffing schedules as per policy.
  • Monitors lateness and absenteeism of the staff and take appropriate disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Participates in interviewing, hiring and evaluation of the staff.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of labor management issues.
  • Prepares and submits monthly reports and statistics to Associate Director of Nursing in a timely manner.
  • Conducts unit staff meeting, submits minutes of meeting to Director of Nursing.
  • Participates in environmental rounds. Maintain a safe and clean environment for residents and employees. Observes and reports environmental hazards.
  • Participates in departmental and interdepartmental committees, which influences or determine policies affecting nursing practice and resident care.
  • Performs other related duties assigned by the Director/Associate Director of nursing. In an emergency, performs other duties necessary for the welfare of the residents or the efficient operations of the facility.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or related Health Care field.
  • Master’s in Nursing preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum five (5) years as Registered Nurse.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Demonstrates competence as a Registered Nurse.
  • Demonstrates competence in leadership skills with supervisory experience.
  • Critical thinking, math, and computer skills.
  • Works as a team player.
  • Demonstrates respect and professionalism in all interactions
  • Excellent oral and communication skills
  • Decision making and problem solving
  • Ability to fully utilize BHMC's electronic record systems, equipment and healthcare and billing systems relevant to this position.

Licenses, Certifications:

  • Licensed and currently registered as a Professional Nurse in New York State required.
  • BCLS certification required.
  • ACLS certification preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physically demanding, high-stress environment requiring prolonged periods of standing, reaching, walking throughout the working day.
  • Position will be required to stoop, bend, lift and carry items weighing up to 35 pounds for routine performance of essential functions.
  • An individual in this position may be exposed to: Adverse indoor environmental conditions, Blood borne pathogens, Blood and body fluids, Physical hazards (e.g., needle pricks, etc.), communicable diseases, chemical hazards, radiation, and repetitive motions.
  • Full range of body motion, able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist lifting and moving patients.
  • Manual and finger dexterity, as well as hand and eye coordination.
  • Corrected vision and hearing to within normal range.
  • Frequently sitting at desk working on computer.
