Hastings Insurance is currently looking for a Claim Subrogation Supervisor to join its Operational Oversight team! The Claim Subrogation Supervisor provides coaching, development, training, supervision, and business result collection/analysis in a claim unit setting. The position is responsible for recovery operations and will work with management to supervise, train, and support the claim staff in the pursuit of subrogation recoveries. In addition, they will direct staff through proper investigation, evaluation, negotiation and resolution of claim recoveries, within the Company’s contractual and legal obligations while also ensuring timely service to our customers.
Position Location & Work Format
This role can be flexible in its location. Hastings will entertain candidates who reside within our five-state territory (Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, or Illinois) to work in a remote capacity. Candidates who reside within the greater Hastings, MI area can work either a full-time onsite or hybrid work arrangement. Regardless of the location, this role will generally work within our standard office hours of Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Hastings may consider candidates from outside our five-state territory if other elements of their application are strong.
Position Duties & Responsibilities
- Leads and develops the claim subrogation unit including coaching, training, mentoring, developing, performance management, hiring, and disciplinary recommendations across multiple levels of experience.
- Manages all claim recovery operations, including both internal staff and outside vendors, to ensure effective recovery investigation, evaluation, litigation strategies, and timely disposition of subrogation claims.
- Complies with all state and federal regulations, Core Values, and established processes and guidelines.
- Provides direction and guidance to staff to ensure they have sufficient knowledge and skill to provide exemplary customer service with timely recoveries across all lines of business.
- Ensures that staff provides prompt and courteous service in accord with department standards and corporate service goals.
- Actively monitors performance and reviews open and closed claims to ensure that recovery potential is identified and handled according to Company policies and procedures.
- Maximizes the utilization of Company loss and expense saving programs while directing and monitoring the use of outside vendors to ensure quality service and cost effectiveness.
- Develops and implements subrogation policies, procedures, and organizational structure for the Claim Division.
- Ensures that staff properly utilizes the Claim system of record to document all claim activity.
- Coordinates relevant claim information across departments, such as Loss Control, Underwriting, and Sales.
- Serves as an expert resource to others in the Claim Division regarding subrogation recoveries, legal changes related to recovery efforts, industry trends, best practices, and strategy.
- Performs legal research.
- Monitors and distributes pertinent changes in insurance law, tort law, or litigation practices related to subrogation and recovery.
- Develops relationships with Company agency force to ensure excellent customer service for our policyholders.
- Maintains confidentiality of claim information.
- Actively participates in professional development, i.e. continuing education or self-improvement.
- Secures and/or maintains appropriate state license(s) and continuing education credits, as necessary.
- Other duties as assigned by leadership, either verbally or in writing.
Candidate Requirements & Qualifications
- A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent insurance education and work experience are required.
- Five years minimum claim experience, with increasing responsibility, is preferred.
- Prior leadership experience in a claim handling setting is also preferred.
- Professional designations or be actively working toward a designation is preferred.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent customer service, organization, prioritization, influence, conflict management, and teamwork skills.
- Demonstrated critical thinking skills and the ability to be decisive.
- Self-motivated with the ability to plan, prioritize, and complete tasks independently without close supervision.
- Adapts easily to new or changing assignments, priorities, requirements, or situations.
- Negotiation skills in demanding situations and ability to effectively manage conflict while maintaining relationships.
- Demonstrated PC skills including proficient use of Microsoft Office products.
