Position Summary & Objectives

Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will manage and supervise all aspects of accounting from payroll to tax compliance. The Controller is responsible for day-to-day support of accounts payable, general ledger, purchasing and payroll functions and ensures the timeliness of the accounting cycle and accuracy of financial reports. A successful candidate will be a team-oriented, servant leader that is willing to collaborate with other members of the accounting team to ensure goals are achieved.

Essential Functions

  • Lead and supervise direct reports by utilizing effective leadership that motivates, inspires and supports the team to perform at highest levels of engagement and produce highest quality outcomes
  • Identify staff needs and provide relevant training for staff growth and development
  • Prepare reports which summarize the practice’s financial position in areas of income, expenses and profits both on a routine basis and as requested; offer insight to leadership
  • Collaborate within the finance department to prepare annual budgets; analyze variances from budgets on a monthly basis and report issues to CFO
  • Serve as primary liaison to third-party tax accountants for shareholder quarterly estimated tax payments and other routine requests or correspondence
  • Evaluate and ensure ongoing compliance with debt covenants; responsible for providing financial institutions with required statements and information at specified intervals
  • Monitor and collaborate with CFO to ensure that cash resources are adequate to meet entity obligations and to plan for future investments
  • Prepare distribution calculations for practice and related-entity holding companies; verifying formulas, expenses and related items
  • Review and approve bi-weekly payrolls
  • Examine weekly check runs for high-level appropriateness and accuracy
  • Examine monthly Bill Spend & Expense transactions and coding for appropriateness and accuracy
  • Review and approve proposed journal entries on a monthly basis
  • Responsible for the development and enforcement of internal controls to maximize protection of company assets, and adherence to policies, procedures, and workflows
  • Enhance accounting department use of existing software and other available technology including leading implementation of new software if necessary and training of key employees
  • Assess and ensure consistent accounting policies, practices, and procedures across all accounting functions, adhering to relevant standards and remaining knowledgeable of proposed legislation or changes to accounting standards
  • Become proficient at Sage Intacct accounting software, particularly in the areas of report writing and understanding of platform capabilities
  • Other duties as assigned

Competency

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of financial system programs and applications; experience with Sage Intacct and Quickbooks preferred
  • Knowledge of finance and accounting and its direct impact on the practice’s bottom line and distributable income, and other relevant metrics and KPI’s
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; a proficiency in MS Excel is a must

Physical Demands

Manual dexterity is required for heavy amounts of computer input. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit. Will need to see, talk, and hear to accommodate all candidates through the process. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Be able to lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.

Equipment Operated

Standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, telephones, etc.

Work Environment

The position is in well-lighted, well ventilated office environment. Occasional evening and weekend work.

Education / Experience / Licenses / Certifications

Required

  • Highest level of ethical standards, integrity, and confidentiality
  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • Minimum three years of management experience in accounting
  • Successful candidates will have excellent communication, management and problem-solving skills

Preferred (in addition to Required)

  • Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or similar
  • Five to seven years of management experience in accounting; health care specific experience
  • Audit experience
  • Desire to grow professionally through ongoing education
