GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Surgical Care Coordinator serves as the primary staff liaison with all surgery patients from initial physician recommendation for surgery until the patient has completed their post-operative visits. This position facilitates the scheduling of surgical patients, performance of surgical procedures and the on-going care of surgical patients.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Schedules in-office and hospital/ ambulatory surgery center based medical procedures for patients with appropriate provider and time/location slot.
- Provides patients with the information about the process of scheduling surgery, and what to expect during and after surgery.
- Responsible for verifying that all surgical paperwork for each of the practice’s affiliated facilities is current and on file with the practice at all times.
- Informs patients they may require medical clearance and pre-surgical testing as needed and assists with scheduling/ coordinating the same.
- Provides accurate, detailed information to patients regarding pre-operative testing preparation, time of patients scheduled arrival for in-office procedures, and any other directional information as needed; takes appropriate action in responding to questions from patients or their authorized representative.
- Confirms the patient’s insurance provider and obtains prior authorization for inpatient and outpatient procedures.
- Effectively utilizes clinical knowledge when determining if appointment is consistent with the diagnosis and/or indications as indicated by the provider.
- Responsible for ensuring that the physician’s pre and post-surgical protocols are always up to date.
- Interfaces with appropriate facility staff to ensure a cohesive working relationship in providing patient care services.
- Interfaces with appropriate vendor staff to ensure all necessary equipment will be on-site for office and hospital/ ambulatory surgical center procedures.
- Provides patients with discharge instructions and ensures proper follow-up/ post-operative are scheduled at the time the procedure is scheduled.
- Completes pre-procedure phone calls and confirms appointment times for in-office procedures with patients via telephone.
Qualifications
- Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent
- 1-3 years of experience in healthcare scheduling or equivalent of experience in a healthcare setting, knowledge of medical insurance and familiarity with electronic medical records
- Must demonstrate excellent customer service skills
- Must demonstrate a consistent positive attitude, and display of professional conduct at all times
- Must possess excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills with patients, staff, and other healthcare professionals
- Understanding of medical terminology preferred
- Travel to other offices is not normally required, however may be necessary upon request
