Ortho Tech Proficiencies:
- Learn and become proficient in upper extremity, lower extremity, spine, and complex procedures
- Min. 1 year experience as an Ortho Tech to be eligible for promotion to Supervisor without disciplinary action
- Mentor the Ortho Tech I staff members to further educate and enhance their skills.
- Be completely independent in all specialties and procedures, after completion of preceptorship, to work and run a solo satellite clinic with a doctor of any specialty when needed.
- Assist with clinic inventory as needed and directed by supervisor or manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Care: Orthopedic technicians play a crucial role in patient care. They interact directly with patients, preparing them for procedures and explaining treatment plans in relation to the casting/splinting or bracing the patient is receiving. The orthopedic technician may assist the physician in office procedures as well as remove sutures and staples, remove pins, and external traction devices. They are also responsible for answering patient calls or voicemails regarding questions, concerns or problems with casts, splints or devices.
- Casting and Splinting: Orthopedic technicians are responsible for applying and removing casts and splints. They should have a good understanding of anatomy, fractures, and various casting techniques to ensure proper alignment and immobilization within their assigned specialty (upper extremity/spine or lower extremity/spine). They must educate patients on cast care, hygiene, and limitations during the healing process.
- Orthopedic Devices and Equipment: Orthopedic technicians are responsible for assembling, maintaining, and adjusting orthopedic devices and equipment such as various braces of their specialty. They also educate patients on the proper use and care of their orthopedic device, ensuring a comfortable fit and optimal functionality. They must also learn and become proficient with all tools in the toolbox and the cast saw functionality, rules of use and maintenance. They will change out the plaster traps in their assigned clinics based on a spreadsheet with the schedule of when they are to be changed at the end of the day and notify their supervisor upon completion to keep record ·
- Cleanliness and Maintenance of Work Area: Orthopedic Technicians will maintain the cast room in a clean and sanitary manner by ensuring all patient treatment surfaces, exam tables, foot stands, etc. are wiped down with antimicrobial solution after each patient. They are responsible for overall cast room cleanliness and hygiene, which includes monitoring the overall appearance of the patient treatment area.
- Inventory And Supply Management: Orthopedic technicians will order, organize, and maintain PAR level of cast room medical supplies, to include any locations worked. They will ensure casting supplies are adequately ordered and stocked, to ensure neither overstock nor understock of supplies. They are responsible for receiving DME and other supply orders in the appropriate software system following the appropriate packing slip protocol.
- Documentation and Record Keeping: Orthopedic technicians maintain accurate and detailed patient records, including cast/DME clinic patients, treatment plans, and progress notes. They must follow HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality.
- Communication and Collaboration: Orthopedic technicians work closely with orthopedic surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, and other healthcare professionals. They must effectively communicate patient information, assist with DME prescriptions and casting /DME procedures, and collaborate as part of a multidisciplinary team. They must remain visible and/or available to all clinics for casting/DME assistance. This also applies to the Surgery Center and Urgent Care locations. Assist Medical Assistants with rooming patients, lifting patients throughout FOI, and other patient care duties when not casting or bracing.
- Continuing Education: Orthopedic technicians will attend a quarterly department staff meeting that includes an in-service and hands-on training agenda. They will stay up to date with the latest advancements in orthopedic technology and techniques, orthopedic technicians are encouraged to participate in continuing education programs, workshops, and conferences.
- All other duties as assigned.
Ortho Tech Qualifications:
- High School Diploma
- Medical Terminology
- Prefer Certified Athletic Trainer
- Proficient in anatomy and physiology
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
- Ability to attend to and interact with patients in a pleasant, calm, and professional manner.
