Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) is seeking an experienced Construction Inspector – Civil to support operations at the PANYNJ's LaGuardia Airport Resident Engineer’s Office. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring that airport and building construction projects—ranging from concrete work and civil site improvements to paving, drainage, and hydrant fuel systems—are executed with the utmost attention to quality, safety, and regulatory compliance.
Scope of Work
Under the supervision of the Resident Engineer, the Construction Inspector – Civil will be responsible for:
- Inspection & Documentation:
• Evaluating diverse construction activities including concrete work, paving, drainage systems, structural modifications, and more.
• Reading and interpreting construction plans, specifications, and contract documents.
• Preparing detailed daily narratives, special inspection reports, time and material records, and documentation for unit price work. - Coordination & Communication:
• Acting as a key liaison between the Resident Engineer, contract staff, and facility personnel through effective oral and written communication.
• Participating in preconstruction and progress meetings to assess constructability, coordinate inspections, and resolve potential issues.
• Proactively identifying extra work opportunities and keeping the Resident Engineer informed of any potential issues. - Quality & Safety Assurance:
• Conducting on-site audits throughout the construction process to verify adherence to project specifications and safety protocols.
• Ensuring compliance with NYCBC guidelines and relevant codes.
• Coordinating contractor work with facility requirements to maintain safety and operational standards.
Minimum Requirements
Candidates must meet the following minimum qualifications:
- Education & Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is preferred.
• At least 4 years of experience inspecting construction projects ranging from $500K to over $5 million, with exposure to multiple crews per shift.
• Experience with aeronautical construction is highly desirable. - Certifications & Licenses:
• Valid Driver's License with the ability to secure a high SWAC clearance and SIDA card.
• OSHA 30-hour Construction Safety certification is required.
• Additional certifications such as ICC/NICET Level 3 Asphalt or Highway Construction; ACI Concrete Special Inspector; and Work Zone Safety Certifications are a plus. - Skills & Abilities:
• A strong willingness to learn and a proven ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Excellent organizational skills with the capacity to coordinate activities across multiple work locations and teams.
• Proficiency in identifying potential issues and suggesting constructability improvements to ensure smooth project execution.
