The Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS) provides encouragement, hope, assistance, guidance, and understanding to support individuals in their recovery journey. The MHPS will provide direct and indirect support to adults with mental health challenges. The MHPS will provide peer support services, role model competency in recovery and ongoing coping skills. Services may be both individual and group at an outpatient clinic, in the community, or in individual’s homes. The MHPS will have personal lived experienced navigating behavioral health systems and draw upon this to inspire hope and model relationships built on respect, trust, and validation. By sharing their own lived experience, the MHPS will help adults to enhance wellness, create strategies for self-empowerment, and take concrete steps towards building fulfilling, self-determined lives for themselves. Walking alongside the adults on their journey, the MHPS is an ally and advocate. The MHPS is not a clinician, but will work alongside, complement, and enhance the work of the clinical team. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.Must be familiar with and/or willing to be trained in trauma-informed care. This includes understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma, and an ability to work in a behavioral environment where staff convey dignity, respect, hopefulness, and the opportunity for choice and empowerment among consumers.
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
A successful candidate will have the following minimum skills and qualifications:
- Must have personal lived experience navigating behavioral health systems and be willing to appropriately share that story to impact others
- Must demonstrate current self-directed recovery (prefer at least 1 year recovery stability)
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Develop authentic, meaningful relationships with individuals through empathy, sharing experiences, listening, and collaborating with genuine curiosity and interest
- Assist and support adults to identify and build community and natural supports
- Promotes self-advocacy by assisting adults in articulating their personal goals and desires
- Maintains open and frequent communication with the team; reports all safety concerns promptly
- Participates in regularly scheduled supervision
- Prefer those that have an understanding of the local community
- Bilingual ability (English/Spanish) is preferred by not required
- Computer operating skills are essential
- Ability to participate respectively as a team member during department and agency meetings
- Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion by following instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices
- Travel between locations as assigned using your own reliable transportation. May include transportation of individuals in services.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor
- Must have a Texas driver’s license, reliable transportation, a good driving record, and a valid auto insurance card
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Certification:Must be able to obtain MH Peer Specialist Certification within6 months of employment
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
Must be able to bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, lift 25 pounds, walk over various terrains, sit for an extended period, and reach overhead.
Salary : $16 - $18
