What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Risk Reduction Specialist position at Pike Township Fire Department?
The purpose of this position is to develop, implement, promote, and maintain proactive community risk reduction and public safety programs related to fire safe behaviors, fire prevention measures, injury prevention, and life safety education. A summary of the job responsibilities are as follows:
- Develop lesson plans and educational programs pertaining to fire safe behaviors, fire prevention measures, injury prevention, and life safety education.
- Present programs in schools, day care facilities, pre-schools, and senior citizen facilities.
- Assist local businesses with fire safety education and evacuation planning.
- Serve as department liaison to the Indiana Safety Educators.
- Coordinate/oversee various department programs, including Project Lifesaver, Juvenile Firesetter, smoke detectors, car seat fitting station, the annual safety festival, and Fire Prevention Week activities.
- Create news releases on programs and activities of interest to the community.
- Maintain records of and provide periodic reports for community risk reduction activities, contacts, and programs.
- Secures grant funding for special programs.
- Develops community partnerships.
Required Qualifications
- High School diploma or GED.
- Three years of documented experience in community risk reduction, public fire safety education, teaching or group instruction with an emphasis on youth lesson planning.
- Valid Driver’s license.
- State of Indiana Public Fire and Life Safety Educator Certification, or ability to obtain the certification within one year of appointment.
- Child Passenger Safety Technician or ability to obtain certifications within one year.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree (or greater) with previous teaching experience; primary education experience is highly desirable.
- Experience in Journalism, marketing, public affairs, or a related field.
- Previous fire service experience.
- Certification as a Public Fire Safety Educator in accordance with NFPA 1035.
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
- Experience in research and procurement of outside funding resources for the purpose of supporting public education programs.
- Experience in developing marketing or public education material using programs such as Canva, Indesign, and Photoshop, etc.
- Experience developing, managing and analyzing social media campaigns and social media channels.
Working Conditions
- Generally will work 40 hours per week, with some flexibility in time of day and day of week, depending upon the particular needs of education programs and/or meetings. Some community or public education events will take place on nights, weekends, and holidays.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $62,400.00 - $69,300.00 per year
