The Calibration and Metrology Specialist plays a pivotal role in the precision and accuracy of measurement processes within the Metrology and Calibration Laboratory. This position focuses on the development and improvement of calibration processes, calibration of Measurement and Test Equipment (M&TE), and ensuring adherence to quality and accreditation standards, such as ISO/IEC 17025. The role also emphasizes technical leadership, process optimization, and collaboration across teams to maintain excellence in metrology and calibration services.


Specific Responsibilities:

Calibration Support

  • Perform and oversee calibration of M&TE across laboratory disciplines, including tooling, dimensional measurement, electrical, weight, force, surface plates, and aerospace equipment.
  • Ensure and maintain measurement traceability and compliance with quality standards.
  • Develop, validate, and implement calibration methods and templates.
  • Create and maintain measurement uncertainty budgets and perform analyses to meet precision requirements.
  • Conduct technical analyses of measurement results, ensuring accuracy, precision, and traceability.

Process Development and Improvement

  • Lead the development and validation of new calibration processes to expand laboratory capabilities.
  • Identify opportunities for improvement in calibration procedures and implement necessary changes.
  • Assist in the selection of calibration equipment, considering specifications and measurement uncertainties.

Quality Management and Accreditation

  • Support the maintenance and expansion of the Quality Management System (QMS), ISO/IEC 17025 scope of accreditation, and ISO 9001 accreditation.
  • Ensure accreditation requirements are met and assist in expanding calibration services as needed.
  • Evaluate and manage measurement systems to identify sources of error and mitigate risks.

Team Collaboration and Training

  • Define training requirements and execute training for personnel on new calibration processes.
  • Serve as a technical resource, providing support to engineering, laboratory, and calibration teams.
  • Promote expertise in measurement science, ensuring the integrity and credibility of calibration services.

System and Instrument Management

  • Maintain a master list of lab instruments and support calibration schedules.
  • Manage data system software and hardware configurations, including tools such as MET/TEAM, MET/CAL, Indysoft, and ACS.
  • Coordinate purchasing, installation, and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
  • Conduct maintenance and verifications for advanced instruments, including GC-FID, GC-MS/MS, U/HPLC, and LC-MS/MS.

Other Duties

  • Perform preventative and routine maintenance on instruments.
  • Provide technical leadership for calibration software and related systems.
  • Participate in product development stages to ensure accurate specifications and performance.
  • As requested, work with relevant PJi teams to promote the calibration lab services and grow the lab’s customer base.
  • Execute additional duties or special projects as assigned.


Qualifications:

Educational and Professional Background

  • Associate's Degree in Engineering, Life Sciences, Metrology, or a related technical field (required).
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent military training. (preferred).
  • Instrumentation Technical Training Certificate (ISA-CCST) or equivalent (preferred).
  • Professional certification or degree in Engineering, Metrology, or other STEM fields preferred.

Experience and Technical Skills

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in Metrology, Instrumentation, or Calibration (required).
  • 3 years of applied technical experience in metrology, including physical, electrical, and dimensional measurement technologies.
  • Comprehensive understanding of ISO/IEC 17025 and related industry standards such as ASTM and ISO 9001.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and calibration software systems.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis techniques and uncertainty management methodologies.
