Code Compliance Inspector - (Planning- Housing Code Enforcement)

Position Summary

Perform field investigations of City land-use to assess code compliance, business registration/license, and property maintenance ordinances; perform field inspections of occupied and vacant properties for possible code violations; issue notifications for all code violations; coordinate assigned activities with other City departments and outside agencies.

Minimum Education, Experience And Additional Requirements

Education and experience directly related to the minimum requirements below may be interchangeable on a year for year basis.

Associate's degree from an accredited college or university; and

Two (2) years of experience in any combination of the following areas:


  • Property or code enforcement
  • Building construction
  • Construction management
  • Zoning enforcement to include inspections involving investigations, interpreting code, and ordinance violations
  • Housing inspection, management, and maintenance

Experience in government preferred.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License, or the ability to obtain by the date of hire.
Possession of a City Operator's Permit (COP) within six (6) months from the date of hire.

Preferred Knowledge

  • Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations
  • OSHA rules, codes and regulations
  • Principles and practices of code compliance, code enforcement
  • Principles, practices and methods of investigation
  • Principles and practices of construction safety
  • Methods and techniques of field inspection and investigative work, report writing, and documentation of code violations
  • Standard legal issues related to field inspections, investigative work, court appearances, and notifications
  • Local zoning laws, land use codes, and regulations that govern construction in specific areas (e.g., residential, commercial, industrial)
  • Principles and practices of customer service and public relations
  • Construction methods, materials and construction sequencing.
  • Legal principles applied to code enforcement procedures.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping and report preparation
  • Basic mathematical principles

Preferred Skills & Abilities

  • Conduct Planning compliance field inspections and investigations
  • Perform residential and commercial property investigations to assess code violations
  • Collect and analyze field data through interviews, observations and inspections.
  • Write clear, concise inspection reports and documentation
  • Testify in a public court on matters related to code compliance
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public
  • Interpret and explain City policies and procedures
  • Conduct business in a courteous and professional manner
  • Communicate clearly and concisely
  • Prepare and complete daily reports
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Maintain information of a sensitive and/or confidential nature.
  • Perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
