Job Summary
The Plant Maintenance Manager reports to and works under direct supervision of the Director of Plant Engineering & Maintenance (Director). The Manager is responsible for coordination, direction, and supervision of all activities of the Maintenance Department related to the maintenance, repair, or installation of plant production equipment, machines, and systems. The Plant Maintenance Manager may be expected to personally direct certain maintenance activities requiring a high level of expertise or knowledge.
Main Functions:
- Oversees, coordinates, and manages assigned plant production equipment, machine, and system related maintenance activities. Ensures plant production equipment and systems are properly maintained and repaired to meet Company guidelines and production requirements. Oversees and directs assigned maintenance personnel to ensure timely, efficient, and correct completion of maintenance activities.
- Establishes priorities and determines labor distribution for normal department functions within range of responsibility. Works with Maintenance Supervisor and Facilities Maintenance Manager to establish schedules for timely completion of work. Consults with the Director and production department managers to determine priorities.
- Visits and inspects maintenance jobs in progress. Oversees and assesses performance of workers, quality of work, and efficiency of projects. Suggests and develops new methods of performing maintenance jobs.
- Works with engineers and supervision to develop and clarify maintenance requirements of projects. Assists with project design and estimates costs, hours, and materials.
- Procures, supervises, and coordinates outside contractors after Director or management approval. Ensures contractors are trained and follow Plenco safety rules and procedures.
- Works with the Director and Engineering Department personnel to establish preventive and predictive maintenance programs. Monitors existing programs such that all plant equipment is thoroughly tested, inspected, and maintained on a scheduled basis to ensure reliable operation. Reports any deviations to the Director.
- Acquires and maintains working knowledge of all department equipment and jobs within range of responsibility to provide assistance and supervision to Maintenance personnel. Recommends equipment or procedure changes that will improve department efficiency or safety to the Director. Assists with planning equipment improvements.
- Maintains and controls supplies of maintenance parts and materials for plant production equipment. Determines proper inventory levels required to minimize operational downtime without carrying excessive inventory.
- Works with the Director, Maintenance Supervisor, and Purchasing Department in the establishment of vendors for items within range of responsibility; follows Company policies and procedures regarding requisitions. Reviews Maintenance Department requisitions related to assigned responsibilities before processing. Submits Maintenance Capital Equipment Requisitions to the Director for management approval.
- Directs 5S and other improvement projects within range of responsibility. Monitors key performance indicators as defined by the Director and investigates reasons for performance issues. Develops and implements improvement plans and initiatives.
- Works with Maintenance Supervisor and Facilities Maintenance Manager to develop safe working practices within the department. Works with the Safety Department to develop and implement safety initiatives and projects throughout the plant.
Personnel:
- Monitors personnel policies and procedures for consistent interpretation and assurance of implementation. Directs compliance with all Company personnel, safety and operating policies and procedures.
- Directs activities of assigned personnel in the Maintenance Department. Reviews and approves vacation schedules for assigned personnel. Reviews individual performance of assigned personnel and makes recommendations to management regarding promotion, transfer, discipline, or discharge.
- Ensures that assigned maintenance employees receive proper training and are progressing according to schedule. Submits employee appraisal reports on work performance at the end of training periods and on an annual basis.
- Counsels with assigned department employees as to their performance and merit ratings. Documents all such counseling including that required when employee performance is substandard. Ensures consistent disciplinary action is taken when needed and proper documentation is kept.
- Keeps in close contact with the Maintenance Supervisor regarding employee relations problems with assigned employees. Acts between the Supervisor and hourly employees when necessary. Counsels individuals on personal matters when appropriate or requested. Consults with or makes referrals to the Director and Personnel Department, as needed.
- Consults with Industrial Engineering relative to wage and job content studies. Recommends revisions to job descriptions and requests studies of wage rates, as needed.
- Directs compliance with all Company safety regulations and procedures. Confers with Safety Department personnel regarding safety problems and policies as necessary.
- Initiates requests for restaffing up to the maximum approved manning levels. Initiates requisitions for additional manpower or recommendations to decrease staffing and submits them to the Director for approval. Approves people hired for or transferred into Maintenance positions within range of responsibility or rejects them for good cause.
Qualifications:
- Technical degrees will be considered based on prior job experience.
- 10 years of maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment
- 5 years of prior experience managing and leading others
- Looking for candidates with excellent people and team building skills
- Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills, preferably background with Six Sigma and Lean principles
- Must have excellent written and verbal skills with the ability to effectively communicate at all levels of the organization
