Job Description: Project Manager – Substation Construction

Location: North-Central Florida

Reports To: Operations Manager

Department: Structural and Electrical

We are seeking a Project Manager to oversee the planning, execution, and completion of substation construction projects for electric utilities. This includes managing all aspects of the project, including scope, timeline, budget, procurement, and client relations. The Project Manager will be expected to collaborate with internal teams, subcontractors, and clients to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with safety and quality standards.

As a key player in the construction and commissioning of substations, you will also oversee key construction disciplines such as foundation work, conduit and grounding installation, and material estimating and procurement. Additionally, you will act as the primary customer service representative, ensuring clear communication and fostering strong relationships with utility clients.

Successful candidates must work with existing crews in Florida for at least 3 months and maybe longer to learn Powerserve work and safety methods. The best candidate for this position must have a good driving record, a valid Florida driver’s license, and their own means of reliable transportation. Successful candidates will demonstrate respect for everyone.

Responsibilities:

  • Project Planning & Management:
    • Develop and manage detailed project schedules, work plans, and resource allocation to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
    • Lead and coordinate project meetings, track progress, and proactively resolve issues impacting project timelines or deliverables.
    • Maintain detailed project documentation, including project plans, contracts, change orders, RFIs, and meeting notes.
  • Procurement & Material Management:
    • Actively participate in procurement for all necessary materials and equipment, including working with vendors and suppliers to ensure timely delivery.
    • Ensure materials meet project specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements.
    • Manage inventory and material budgets, track project costs, and identify procurement-related risks.
  • Customer Service & Stakeholder Management:
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for utility clients, ensuring clear communication and high customer satisfaction.
    • Prepare and deliver regular project updates to stakeholders, including progress reports, budget status, and risk assessments.
    • Collaborate with clients to define project goals and scope changes and address any client concerns or needs.
  • Construction Management:
    • Managing progress of all construction phases, ensuring all work meets customer expectations.
    • Coordinate with field teams and subcontractors to ensure all tasks are completed per the project timeline.
    • Monitor work progress, assist in mediating any challenges on-site, and ensure adherence to customer utility standards.
  • Reporting & Compliance:
    • Monitor project progress and generate regular reports on status, risks, and any issues affecting the project.
    • Participate as a team member to facilitate compliance with all safety regulations, permitting, and environmental standards.
    • Conduct periodic project reviews and post-project evaluations to assess project performance and lessons learned.
  • Risk Management:
    • Proactively identify potential project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
    • Address any unforeseen issues during the project, minimizing impacts on schedule, budget, and quality.
Qualifications

Required (Basic):

    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in project management within the utility (electric, water/wastewater, or gas) construction industry.
    • Experience with managing multi-disciplinary construction teams.
    • Familiarity with utility industry standards, codes, and regulations.
    • 15% travel within the central to northern region of Florida is required
    • Fluent in in English (speak, read, write)
    • Osha 30
Preferred:

    • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
    • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
Skills & Characteristics:

    • Strong understanding of project management principles, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation.
    • Proven experience with procurement processes and material management.
    • Ability to lead, motivate, and collaborate with diverse teams, including subcontractors, internal staff, and clients.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, focusing on client interaction and relationship management.
    • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to proactively identify issues and implement effective solutions.
    • Familiarity with project management software (e.g., MS Project, Procore, etc.).
    • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to work on construction sites, including exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
    • Must be able to stand or walk for extended periods.
    • Must adhere to all safety guidelines and wear personal protective equipment as required.
