Job Purpose: Responsible for the specimen collecting; processing; test performance, and reporting test results. This includes the pre-analytic, analytic, and post analytic phases of testing. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served; Neonate, Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric.
Essential Functions: (Examples of Duties)
- Patient collecting duties and performs testing per protocols/procedures including pre- and post- analytic phases
- Produce accurate and reliable data and interpret results
- Demonstrates competence in all procedures required by a Medical Technologist
- Follows the laboratorys procedure for specimen handling and processing, test analysis, reporting, and maintaining records of patient test results
- Maintain records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens
- Adhere to the laboratorys quality control policies, and document all quality control activities, instrument, and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed
- Follow the laboratorys established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratorys established acceptable levels of performance
- Be capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results, and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the Administrative Laboratory Director, Laboratory Supervisor, or LIS Coordinator
- Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratorys established performance specifications.
- Follow all health and safety regulations when handling laboratory specimens.
- Monitors and completes patient cases in Athena
- Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements/Qualifications: (Describe minimum qualifications, preferred or required)
Education: High School Diploma or GED
Experience: Prior experience as a lab assistant, preferred. Board Certification encouraged.
Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures. Skilled in verbal and written communication. Excellent customer relation skills. Ability to clearly communicate verbally with patients and staff. Ability to read, interpret, and apply laboratory policies and procedures.
Licenses/Certifications: None
Working Conditions: Normal laboratory environment. Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), bio hazard body fluid, and hazardous chemicals. Sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distractions and stress. Hazardous working conditions in which individual are exposed to definite risk of bodily injury through contact with moving instrumentations, chemicals, and/or body fluids. Certain incidental functions may require use of protective gear such as face shields, gloves, and fluid-resistant coats. Occasional evening or weekend work.
Physical Demands: Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier and other laboratory equipment. Attention to detail and concentration.
Requires normal range of hearing and eye sight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports. Ability to work in a fast-paced, ever changing environment. Medium work of lifting up to 50 pounds and/or carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Responsible for lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling objects. Occasional evening or weekend work.
