Job Summary
The Museum Store Supervisor is responsible for providing exceptional customer service to Historic Jamestowne guests at the Visitor Center museum store and Archaearium museum store. The Museum Store Supervisor also assists with staff training and oversight, implementing a welcoming “front of house” operation and organized sales floor. Acts as manager on duty on scheduled MOD days and in the absence of senior management.
Essential Functions
- Serve as manager on duty as scheduled, and as required in the absence of senior management. MOD responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Opening store by following standard opening procedures
- Overseeing daily operations at the Visitor Center and Archaearium stores and making sure they have the necessary resources for the day
- Being aware of groups, events, programs, weather, and other situations that may arise and affect the workplace. Maintain flexibility in managing appropriate responses to each as necessary
- Closing store by following standard closing procedures
- Maintain a high standard of professionalism while supporting retail operations. Duties include:
- Resolving customer concerns escalated above the associate level
- Responding to customer inquiries by phone and email
- Accepting outgoing mail as a USPS Village Post Office. Charge visitors for shipping as necessary.
- Fulfill, pack, and ship customer online orders
- Checking in merchandise shipments and preparing products for the sales floor
- Assisting in maintaining inventory accuracy by performing periodic inventory audits
- Adjusting on-hand quantities for damaged merchandise
- Performing store-to-store inventory transfers
- Assist with staff management and oversight by fostering an entrepreneurial team approach and shared vision of outstanding customer service.
- Maintaining a presence on the sales floor to observe and assist our team members
- Modeling exemplary behavior for Museum Store Associates through action
- Assisting with new employee training and orientation
- Providing senior management with feedback on Associates’ performance
- Ensure a positive and memorable shopping experience for visitors through the following:
- Engaging visitors with a welcoming and efficient point-of-sale service that includes detailed attention to all retail procedures including conducting sales and returns
- Interpreting the significance of artifact-based reproductions and Jamestown Rediscovery publications
- Providing visitors with information on the history of Jamestown, the historical park, our unique public/private partnership, exhibits and artifacts, visitor amenities, and daily tour and program offerings.
- Making connections between products and experience
- Maintaining attractive product displays
- Keeping the sales floor stocked, organized, and clean
- Provide support to senior management by completing additional tasks as assigned.
Job Requirements and Qualifications
Education: High school diploma or GED required. Four-year degree in a relevant field preferred.
Training Requirements (licenses, programs, or certificates): Successfully complete training courses on the history of Jamestown, archaeological processes, and Archaearium exhibits to demonstrate a clear understanding of the material.
Knowledge Requirements: The successful candidate will possess excellent skills in verbal communication, a high level of attention to detail and a team-focused sense of initiative. Must be able to positively interact with and provide services to diverse populations and age groups. Prior knowledge of Jamestown Rediscovery, Preservation Virginia, the National Park Service, or Virginia’s Historic Triangle are useful. Dedication to the mission of education and historic preservation is essential.
Experience: Two (2) year(s) of customer service at a museum or historic site preferred. Other retail experience acceptable. Minimum six months management experience required.

Pay: $17.00 per hour
