Position Overview
The Chief Prosecuting Attorney is responsible for overseeing criminal prosecutions and ensuring the fair and efficient administration of justice. The Chief Prosecuting Attorney will provide legal guidance and support to law enforcement, represent the county in legal matters, and work closely with other county officials to uphold the rule of law in Clare County.
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership and Supervision: Direct, manage, and mentor assistant prosecutors and other staff in the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, providing guidance and leadership to foster a high-performing and ethical team.
- Criminal Prosecution: Lead the prosecution of serious felony, misdemeanor, and juvenile cases. Represent the county in court hearings, trials, motions, and appeals.
- Legal Counsel: Advise law enforcement agencies on legal matters, including investigations, legal procedures, and criminal law issues.
- Policy Development: Develop and implement policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure the effective, ethical, and efficient operation of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
- Case Management: Oversee the review of criminal cases, including the preparation of case files, evidence, and recommendations for prosecution. Ensure compliance with all laws, statutes, and ethical guidelines in case handling.
- Collaboration: Work closely with local law enforcement, judges, defense attorneys, and other community stakeholders to promote public safety and justice.
- Training and Development: Provide ongoing legal training to staff, law enforcement, and other stakeholders on criminal law, legal procedures, and new legislation.
Qualifications
- Education: Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
- Licensure: Must be a licensed attorney in the state of Michigan with membership in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan.
- Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in criminal law.
- Experience prosecuting complex criminal cases, including felonies, misdemeanors, and appeals.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Strong leadership and management abilities.
- High level of integrity, ethics, and commitment to justice.
- In-depth knowledge of Michigan criminal law and court procedures.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and the public.
- Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Physical Requirements: Ability to work in an office environment, attend court sessions, and interact with members of the public and legal professionals.
