ADULT LITERACY INSTRUCTOR POSITION DESCRIPTION
Read Muskegon is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. The mission of Read Muskegon is to strengthen communities through improved literacy. The primary responsibilities of the Adult Literacy Instructor are to plan and instruct adult literacy classes for participants in correctional facilities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Develop, document, refine and deliver lesson plans for the Read Muskegon Life Literacy program in correctional facilities
- Lesson topics include: financial literacy, health literacy, navigating housing/lease agreements, employment literacy, digital literacy, and reading comprehension skills
- Instruct each class in compliance with correctional facility and Read Muskegon policies
- Assist in screening and assessment of participants.
- Maintain daily records of class attendance and progress.
- Maintain a high level of confidentiality.
Required Qualifications:
- B.A. in education or related field. Experience planning lessons for diverse learning needs
- Teaching certificate or eligible to obtain substitute teaching certification.
- At least 1 year experience teaching adult learners.
- Experience working with incarcerated populations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Excellent classroom management skills
- The ability to interact effectively and compassionately with people from a variety of backgrounds
- Computer literacy: Microsoft Office programs, virtual meeting platforms, internet, and email.
- Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, proof of required insurance, and complete a successful background check.
- The position may, from time to time, be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
Contracted 5 hours per week
Working conditions may change and there may be opportunities for increased hours as our programs grow and classes are added.
Teaching Schedule: Mon 2:00-4:00pm, Wed 1:00-2:30pm
Compensation $22/hr
