Position Overview
North Coast is seeking a highly qualified Head Instructor to lead the NCCS sailing program for the summer season. The Head Instructor will be responsible for executing sailing lesson plans, managing safety procedures, supervising staff, and ensuring proper care of boats and equipment. This role requires strong leadership, sailing expertise, and the ability to make real-time program decisions based on environmental factors.
Responsibilities
- Execute sailing lesson plans based on US Sailing guidelines.
- Oversee and manage NCCS safety programs and emergency procedures on and off the water.
- Supervise NCCS staff, including 1–2 Assistant or Lead Instructors, 0–4 Junior Instructors, and volunteers.
- Collaborate with the NCCS Director to manage boat and equipment maintenance and repairs.
- Ensure the proper use, care, and organization of facilities and sailing equipment.
- Maintain accurate class attendance records in coordination with the NCCS Director.
- Direct and delegate staff and volunteer responsibilities.
- Evaluate and provide feedback on staff performance.
- Make informed decisions regarding daily program agendas based on weather and environmental conditions.
- Assist in conducting pre-season staff training and post-season program wrap-up.
- Foster positive relationships with staff, students, parents, volunteers, and the local community.
Schedule
The anticipated work schedule includes weekday instruction and program oversight, with occasional weekend commitments. Hours may vary based on program needs, weather conditions, and special events.
Pay
Compensation is hourly at $18/hour, 35-40 hours/week.
1-year membership to the Bayfield Rec Center from May to May
Qualifications of an Ideal Candidate
- Must be 18 years or older.
- CPR/First Aid certification required.
- US Sailing Level 1 Instructor certification or higher required.
- Lifeguard certification preferred.
- Strong leadership and program management experience.
- Ability to oversee staff, volunteers, and student safety in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with boat maintenance and repairs preferred.
