Lifeguards are the safety-minded monitors of the pool environment, preventing injuries and incidents through effective surveillance and emergency response, and meeting and exceeding all customer expectations from friendly pass scanning to responsive cleaning and tidying. They provide a welcoming environment, are knowledgeable of all pool programs and activities, and are the public face of Reston Aquatics. Substitute lifeguards are responsible for managing their own shift schedules by picking up shifts through the scheduling software rather than having shifts assigned to their schedule during publishing periods. The ideal candidate is energetic, out-going, diligent, confident, and well-spoken.
Job responsibilities include; maintaining a hazard-free environment, enforcing facility policies fairly and consistently, participating in regular practice of their rescue skills and knowledge, providing effective surveillance and back-up coverage in rotation, facility admission processing, retail sales (select facilities only), providing information to customers, routine cleaning, completing reports and forms, assisting customers with equipment, and initiating emergency care and notification of EMS system for life-threatening emergencies, using appropriate protective equipment and standard precautions when exposed to bloodborne pathogens.
All work is performed in an outdoor environment near and around recreational water.
Requirements
- Age 15
- Confident, mature, and well-spoken
- Able to provide quality customer service for a diverse population
- Current American Red Cross certification in ‘Lifeguarding’ (provided upon initial hire)
- Current certification in Bloodborne Pathogens Training (provided upon initial hire)
- Certification reimbursement provided when qualifications are met by end of season
- Ability to move 50lbs, hear whistle alerts from 50 yards, and see hand gestures from 25 yards.
- Corrective eyewear or assistance devices are permitted.
