Job Description
Purpose : Instructors will teach, guide and coach Stand-Up Paddle Board (SUP) to customers on Reston lakes with attention to safety and technique.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
- Confirm all paddlers have registered prior to attending a session.
- Complete the loading and unloading of equipment while keeping launch area organized.
- Conduct a brief orientation to paddlers on land with attention to safety, technique, and equipment.
- Provide guidance and coaching to class participants while on the water.
- Take photos of paddlers with supplied waterproof cameras to document both progress and fun.
- Monitor the use of equipment and properly handle and store gear when not in use.
- Engage with customers and community members in a positive and constructive manner.
- Work at learning level of class.
- Work with individual students within class structure to enable all to correct faults, improve self-image and progress in their fitness program.
- Report to class on time, prepared with materials and equipment, and dressed in appropriate attire.
- Know emergency procedures and the location of emergency equipment.
- Keep class attendance and records.
- Secure qualified substitutes to be approved by supervisor well in advance and provide substitutes with rosters and lesson plans.
- Attend pre-session instructor meetings, staff meetings, and instructor workshops.
- Maintain all personal certifications; attend workshops and recertification training.
- Prepare teaching area with necessary equipment and return it to storage at the end of class
- Participate in branch recruitment for class participants or in program promotional events.
- Support management in programming decisions.
- Adhere to all RA Group Programming policies and procedures.
- Perform related duties as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities : No supervisory responsibility
Requirements
Education – High School Diploma or GED, must be 18 years of age.
Computer Skills - To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
Certificates and Licenses - Requires First Aid, CPR certification or equivalent. American Canoe Association or World Paddle Association (WPA) Certifications for SUP.
Other Skills and Abilities – Minimum of one year teaching experience, must display an outgoing personality, good customer service, demonstrate interest in working with individuals as well as groups of people.
Work Environment / Conditions : Able to teach / work several hours outdoors and on your feet with possible hours in the evenings and on weekends.
