Job Description:
Rising Stars’ Academy is a research-based social service agency established in 2008. Realizing numerous families are not acquiring the skills needed for self-sufficiency into adulthood, we have taken on the challenge of educating families with the skills needed to enhance their present living conditions and prepare them for their future endeavors. As a result, we offer services that serve as a catalyst to help shape the minds, nurture the souls, and impart values to children and their families. Services include home-based family centered casework and therapy, mentoring, parent education, tutoring/literacy, and visitation facilitation.
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
We are currently seeking a hands-on professional tutor who is inspired by the opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of individuals. We are looking for a candidate who can facilitate lessons and provide coaching to students that will assist them in their journey to becoming successful, independent leaders. The candidate’s primary role will be providing individual and small group tutoring sessions. The goal of the tutoring sessions is to increase and enhance students’ mastery of concepts and/or applications of a specific course of study all while adhering to the mission and vision of Rising Stars’ Academy.
DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Build relationships with clients from diverse backgrounds and cultures, exercise discretion, and maintain confidentiality
- Create a learning plan for each client that ensures that their educational goals are met.
- Prepare tutoring sessions to ensure clients’ academic development
- Integrate effective study and learning strategies to maximize clients’ potential for academic progress
- Manage and accurately update data collection and case notes capturing comments and facts relevant to the case
- Provide encouragement to clients so that they feel competent in their own understanding of the material
- Provide consultations and/or participate in conferences with other identified members of clients’ support team
- Enhances department and agency’s reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments
- Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations
- Participate in interdepartmental educational dialogue, supervisions, trainings, and professional development
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Appropriate level of technical expertise to help clients master and advance in a particular subject or skill area
- Creativity and flexibility in order to personalize learning approaches and services
- Patience and compassion for clients as they develop confidence and skills to improve their overall performance
- Ability to address and be sensitive to the needs and attitudes of clients
- Strong verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain challenging concepts, provide instructions, and deliver constructive feedback
- Computer literate with the ability to learn software applications such as Outlook, Teams, Zoom, etc. and shared drives
- Ability to self-motivate, multitask, and work well with minimal supervision
- Ability to function well in a high paced and at times stressful environment
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree or at least 60 hours of post-secondary credit hours preferably in education, social work, psychology, or a related field; but not mandatory
Knowledge about child development, behavior management, learning disabilities, and possible effects of child abuse and neglect on cognitive functioning
Job Types: Part-time, Contract, Internship
Pay: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour

- Weekends as needed
