Safety Specialist

Roskam Baking Company is a contract food manufacturing company that has been operating in the greater Grand Rapids area since 1923. Roskam has five production locations in Grand Rapids Michigan, and additional locations in Californica and Toronto and operates in over 2 million sq ft of production space. Scope of Responsibility:
The Safety Specialist shall uphold, coach, mentor and encourage compliance with all Health Safety and Security programs of RBC. The Safety Specialist will support a multisite organization throughout the Grand Rapids area focusing on delivering compliance across all sites. Responsible to set up a regular inspection schedule of our buildings and equipment and conduct safety training sessions for new and current employees to ensure RBC employees are safe and our facilities comply with all relevant governmental regulations.
Working Relationships:
The Safety Specialist shall communicate in a clear and professional manner to all groups they may encounter in their role. These groups include (not limited to): all levels of RBC employees, visitors, contractors, suppliers, vendors, regulators, and local authorities. The Safety Specialist reports to the Sr Safety manager and maintains plant level responsibility over multiple business units.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Provide EHS support to Roskam Baking Company
- Knowledge and experience with Workers’ compensation, filing claims and assisting in return-to-work program.
- Facilitate safety processes e.g., Job Hazard Analysis/Job Safety Analysis (JHA/JSA), Contractor Safety Requirements, Training, Incident Investigations
- Perform and monitor safety inspections/audit process insuring inspections are completed and properly documented.
- Provide routine inspections of safe work management systems to ensure compliance.
- Track safety action items to ensure timely completion and that priority safety items remain on track for completion.
- Manage safety and environmental reporting and prepare reports such as SARA, OSHA 300 log, TRIR on occurrences and provide statistical information to management.
- Provide guidance to personnel on occupational safety and health and environmental compliance issues as appropriate.
- Develop, maintain, and conduct safety training, including, but not limited to, ergonomics, confined spaces, lock-out/tagout, personal protective equipment, fire extinguisher, hazard communication, ammonia and other programs as required to ensure required employee training.
- Observe workers to determine proper utilization of prescribed safety equipment such as safety glasses, respirators, face shields, goggles, protective outerwear and foot ware, and other required safety devices or clothing. Conduct testing of work areas for noise, toxic substances, and other hazards. Direct and advise facility personnel in evaluation of problems, recommending corrective action, implementing solutions, and ensuring compliance.
- Ensure EHS-related orientation to new employees and contractors at the site.
Key Requirements:
- Experience in Manufacturing GMP environment preferred.
- OSHA 30
- Experience in safety incident classification, investigation methodologies, and root cause analysis
- Able to develop and conduct training for a variety of levels.
- Ability to organize, motivate and lead teams, inspire change and interact cross functionally.
- Working knowledge of OSHA and NFPA standards
- Knowledge of State and Federal safety regulations for the workplace
- Ability to read and interpret OSHA standards.
- Proficient Computer skills - using Microsoft Office
- Ability to think critically and analyze complex problems.
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Strong customer service approach
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a flexible schedule.
Required Qualifications:
- Experienced EHS Professional with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Health & Safety or equivalent, or relevant job experience
- 5 years of Workers’ Compensation
- Applicable EHS certification preferred (ASP/CSP, CHMM, CIH, CWCP)
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
Physical Requirements:
- Able to safely move and work around moving equipment and in a variety of conditions, including standing for long periods of time.
- Able to lift 35 lbs.
Language Skills Requirements:
- Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently, multi-lingual is a plus.
- Ability to effectively communicate with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Ability to effectively communicate with outside agencies as needed.
