Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Accountant for the University Controller's Office. Reporting to the Manager, in the University Controller's organization, this position maintains the chart of accounts value segments, analyzes and reviews financial data, and provides financial accounting support to the University community. Additionally, provides resolutions to a diverse range of problems consistent with an understanding of the mission, vision, role, and goals of the University Controller's Office, and consistent with a comprehensive understanding of accounting in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), applicable regulations, and university policies and procedures.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Maintains accountability and ensures the integrity of the University Chart of Accounts (COA).
  • Interprets, communicates, and implements accounting policies and practices to meet the needs of a diverse university client population
  • Performs professional work requiring specialized to general knowledge in one or more fields of higher education accounting/finance and a solid understanding and application of concepts, theories, principles, practices, regulations, and terminology.
  • Applies Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), University Policies, and professional judgment when reviewing accounting transactions.
  • Custodian of the University's account reconciliation system and maintains accountability over assigned general ledger accounts ensuring university reporting policies and procedures are appropriately applied in accordance with GAAP.
  • Provides accounting assistance and guidance to the University community.

Consistent with the current application of Rutgers Policy 60.3.22, this position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement. The flexible work arrangements outlined in Rutgers Policy 60.3.22 are part of a pilot program that is effective September 1, 2022 through August 31, 2023. Therefore, there is no guarantee that this flexible work arrangement will continue beyond that date. Flexible work arrangements are not permanent, are subject to change or cancellation and contingent on the employee receiving approval in the FlexWork@RU Application System. Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field; or the equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates comprehensive knowledge and understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and practices.
  • Five years of related professional experience in a financial/accounting function with excellent communication skills and computer literacy.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Requires skills in planning and organizing, integrating information, making decisions, and attaining results; excellent communication skills; and computer literacy.
  • Knowledge of US GAAP/GASB to ensure compliance and appropriate reporting.
  • Proven ability to work independently with good analytical and problem solving skills around accounting analytics and processes.
  • High level of organization and ability to summarize conclusions and communicate complex business issues in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to adapt and or implement new or improved system processes, procedures and technologies.
  • Strong verbal, writing, interpersonal, organizational and analytical skills and the ability to function in a professional manner in a team environment.
  • Proficiency at using Microsoft's suite of Office products. This includes spreadsheets, word processing and database applications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced Degree/CPA.
  • Knowledge in higher education accounting.
  • Experience working with an Enterprise Reporting System (ERP system), preferably Oracle Cloud, Smart View, and Tableau.
Equipment Utilized
  • Use of Microsoft Excel, Word, and ORACLE Cloud General Ledger (GL) and Project Portfolio Management (PPM).
  • Analysis of information and processing of correcting journal entries using Excel Templates and the Oracle Base Application.
  • Review and analyze the allowability of transactions using ORACLE Cloud GL and the financial data warehouse.
