Youth Specialist

The Youth Specialist team is responsible for providing child sexual abuse, sexual assault, and abusive relationship primary prevention education to youth Pre-K through 12th, and college students, in our three-county service area. The Youth Specialist will provide follow up advocacy services for youth and students who have experienced or witnessed crimes including but not limited to child abuse, dating/family violence, sexual assault, online exploitation, and harassment.

This position serves youth in all area school districts, with populations diverse by age, race, color, religion, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, national origin, and disability. Applicants in a minority group are encouraged to apply. Bilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Plan and implement educational programs to prevent child abuse, online exploitation, teen dating violence, and teen sexual assault, in all Pre-K-12 and college, in Ontario, Seneca, and Yates Counties.

Facilitate empowerment groups for youth 8-18 and support groups for college students and the community on local campuses and at community locations in our tri-county service area.

Communicate with schools and other community programs to schedule and provide prevention education programming.

Provide follow up services for presentation participants, including referral advocacy, counseling, and mandated reporting to child protective services and law enforcement.

Maintain complete, accurate records on all clients, presentations, and outreach activities.

Provide crisis intervention, advocacy and mentorship to students who have experienced abuse or violence.

Plan and implement educational programs to prevent sexual misconduct and promote healthy relationships on middle school and high school campuses.

Maintain positive working relationships with community partners.

Assess needs, provide referrals, and facilitate connections with other community support services in our area.

Participate in multi-disciplinary teams, campus committee work, and special projects as assigned.

Provide consultation to students, staff, faculty, and administration.

Conduct awareness activities and outreach presentations to students and school communities.

Create violence prevention presentations, and other educational opportunities for youth and school communities that support the Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes mission, vision, and values.

Other duties as assigned.

SKILL SET REQUIRED

Experience working with youth, teens, students, or young adults.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including public speaking experience.

Ability to deal with a variety of crises and emotions in the workplace, communicate with a variety of people, work independently and as a team, and maintain strict confidences using a trauma informed approach.

Must be able to resolve problems, handle conflicts, be adaptable and flexible.

Must be attentive, listen to people, meet clients where they are and collaborate with survivors and their goals.
