Our client is an Electrical Contracting Company. They are seeking a qualified Safety Director to oversee the Safety Department. The Safety Director will coordinate the activities of all Safety Professionals and Programs in support of company operations. 


Duties/Responsibilities:

The person in this role will need to uphold the culture of the company, including relationship-building with customers and general behavior on company and client premises. 

  • Provide strategic direction and leadership to a team of Safety Representatives
  • Establish and manage the goals and objectives for accomplishing safety program work and ensure proper utilization of personnel; delegate functional activities to subordinates and establish supervisory schedules and responsibilities.
  • Manage relationships with all company departments and teams.
  • Proposal and contract development support as it relates to safety and emergency plans.
  • Comply with, enforce, and support company's safety philosophy, safety training, safety manual, and OSHA.
    • Ensure all personnel use/wear all appropriate personal protective equipment and tools.
    • Foster an environment where safety is expected and correct unsafe behavior consistently.
    • Diligently monitor safety in all situations and proactively work to prevent accidents and injuries always.
    • Stop work that is being performed in an unsafe manner.
    • Take corrective/disciplinary action for repetitive safety violations.
    • Reinforce safety rules and the importance of everyone going home safely in meetings, toolbox talks, JSAs, and other opportunities.
  • Plan, organize, and deliver routine safety and emergency preparedness training, business continuity, and disaster recovery.
  • Update, adapt, and continuously improve Company Safety Manual(s), including all associated safety policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough knowledge of all related OSHA regulations and compliance requirements for these   regulations.
  • Research changes in OSHA regulations and prepare programs as required for employee training & customer requirements.
  • Respond to Company personnel on safety-related concerns, questions, and issues.
  • Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for safety inquiries from OSHA, owners, General Contractors, or job site personnel.
  • Work with leadership to understand safety initiatives, goals, and outcomes.
  •  Report results and upcoming plans to leadership every month.
  • Confidently develop and administer a long-term plan to reduce the risk for the company
  • Prepare safety-related pre-qualification documents.
  • Conduct job-site visits, safety inspections, safety meetings, etc., in accordance with company guidelines (which will be established by the Director of Safety in conjunction with the VP of Safety)
  • Ensure that reported safety issues and concerns related to job-site equipment, tools, and personnel are answered by Safety or the respective Operations/Project Manager
  • Ensure that all new union employee safety orientations and drug screenings are conducted.
  • Work closely with the Claims Manager to collect proper documentation for injuries, property claims, motor vehicle accidents, and OSHA 300 logs.
  • Guide or perform post-accident investigations and translate findings into preventative training to reduce or eliminate the risk of repeated accidents.
  • Contact and subcontract a professional safety consulting firm for specific safety concerns, requirements, or regulations when required.
  • Research, specify, and approve all safety-related equipment purchased.
  • Ensure that all safety-related equipment is inventoried, assigned, and tracked. 
  • Coordinate or perform safety equipment inspections, testing, and certification as required by regulation or policy.
  • Provide continued support and research related to specific or unusual safety issues.
  • Responsible for other duties so assigned.
  • Cross-train in all facets of the Safety Division, preparing to fill in for anyone absent and grow in responsibility and scope over time.

Requirements


  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety and Health, EH&S Management, or a related field preferred or equivalent work experience. Master’s  degree is a plus. CUSA or CUSP is preferred. 
  • Experience as a Lineman preferred. Electric utility construction background required.
  • 5 years of leadership/managerial experience within Safety and Health is required
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and demonstrated training delivery skills.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of OSHA and applicable federal, state, local, and company safety regulations.
  • OSHA 500 certification would demonstrate this.
  • Ability to build trust across diverse teams and divisions and influence even without direct authority.
  • Expertise in regulatory communications
  • Ability to recognize onsite risk factors and take appropriate action with determination and tact.
  • Sense of responsibility and ownership for the project
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, OSHA requirements, and safety manuals.
  • Ability to speak effectively with customers and employees of the company.
  • At times, prolonged periods of driving may be required.
  • Visual and sensory acuity is required to observe facilities or structures and operate equipment and vehicles.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license, clean driving record, and ability to drive a motorized vehicle.


Travel Requirements: 

· Ability to travel overnight for approximately 2 weeks per month.


Physical Requirements: 

· Ability to perform site visits, including walking and standing for extended periods.

· Capable of lifting or carrying light to moderate items related to safety equipment.

· Navigating various environments, from office spaces to industrial or construction sites.

· Exposure to outdoor weather conditions during site inspections.

· Climbing stairs or ladders as part of site audit activities.

**The physical requirements may vary depending on the industry and the specific nature of the work environment. The Safety Director should be capable of meeting the physical demands associated with the industry in which they operate.**
