SLCC Student, Work Study- Lab Aide, Mathematics (Part-Time)

Learning Assistants are expected to attend an assigned section of a math class to assist students with activities, attend paid trainings, tutor students outside of class, attend a weekly meeting with other SLCC Learning Assistants, and attend a weekly pedagogy class. Expected time to be 10-15 total hours total per week.Essential Responsibilities and Dutiesꞏ Attend classes with students to establish connection / bonding with the instructors and the students and assist with classroom activities.ꞏ Provide quality learning assistance to students enrolled in an assigned section of a math class. ꞏ Assist instructors with one-on-one planning meetings to ensure that students are remaining engaged and absorbing material.ꞏ Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, and build confidence in students.ꞏ Work with students in groups providing support and structure in project-based assignments and work with math manipulative classroom aidesꞏ Teach students study skills, note-taking techniques and test-taking strategies as neededꞏ Participate in training, development opportunities and other events when available.ꞏ Maintain regular communication with your supervisor and other Learning AssistantsThere will also be a required weekly meeting with the instructor and other Learning Assistants. Learning Assistants can set their own schedule for tutoring students outside of class timeEssential Responsibilities and Duties Continued Minimum QualificationsPell-eligiblePassed math course in which applicant is applying to be a Learning Assistant or placed into a higher math class,Must have and maintain a minimum of 2.75 GPAPreferred QualificationsFirst-generation college student (neither parent has earned a 4-year degree),Applicant will have recently taken the math class in which they are applying to be a Learning Assistant at SLCC,Applicant has attended SLCC for at least one semesterKnowledge, Skills & Abilitiesꞏ Knowledge of Mathematics through College Algebra.ꞏ Ability to communicate the subject matter effectively.ꞏ Application of different learning strategies, including active learning and peer-to-peer techniques. ꞏ Self-motivation and ability to work independently with limited supervision.ꞏ Empathy for and understanding of the diverse student population in the college.ꞏ Ability to listen and answer questions during interactions with students. ꞏ Great time management and organizational skills.ꞏ Provide support for content and concept understanding, not direct answers to graded work (e.g. homework, projects, quizzes, etc.)ꞏ Be open and available for observations and follow-up conversations.ꞏ Help students learn how to learn the material.ꞏ Help students develop or refine their study skills and become independent learners.ꞏ Demonstrated sensitivity to, respect for, and understanding of the needs of students seeking learning support.ꞏ Ability to follow written and oral instructions effectively.ꞏ Ability to be flexible in a constantly changing, fast-moving educational environment.ꞏ Ability to perform clerical tasks effectively.ꞏ Ability to work well with others and in a team environment.Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties Special InstructionsWork-study is awarded to SLCC students through the Federal College Work-Study program, which requires establishing financial need through the FAFSA application from the Financial Aid Office.
