What are the responsibilities and job description for the SLCC Student Work Study-Specialist I, Bruin Pantry Staff Lead position at Salt Lake Community College?
In alignment with community engagement values and to support student success, Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership, & Community Engagement provides basic needs resources. Bruin Pantry Peer Specialists support the Bruin Pantry network by assisting general operations. Through the Bruin Pantries, SLCC distributes a variety of foods and hygiene products to students, faculty, and staff at the college. Our team of staff, student leaders, and volunteers receives, processes, and distributes these goods equitably and efficiently while clearly communicating pantry policies and other relevant information. Bruin Pantry Specialists supports an assigned pantry location, takes inventory of food stock, purchases or rescues food from local stores, consults with teammates regarding resource reallocation, and transports products across various campuses. Success of this role is measured by well-stocked and equitably distributed resources available to visitors during distribution hours.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Must be able to work 20 hours a week.
- Ensure pantries follow Utah Food Bank and community partners operational standards.
- Assist in overseeing the daily operations of pantry locations.
- Take regular inventory of food availability at an assigned pantry location (Taylorsville Redwood, South City, West Valley Center, Jordan, and/or Herriman Campus).
- Communicate missing food groups to supervisor and pantry staff and plan restocking strategies.
- Stock pantries with food supplements from purchases, donations, pantry
relocation, and food rescue program.
- Regularly organize back stock to ensure space is available for new inventory.
- Exhibit positive customer service and relationship building when
interacting with pantry visitors.
- Assist in communication with peer leaders for events, pantry updates and hours.
- Organize daily tasks for student leaders working in the pantry.
- During academic breaks and finals, supplement coverage during pantry distributions.
- Attend in weekly meetings with pantry staff, supervisor and Thayne Center staff.
- Occasionally create materials in Canva to communicate updates to patrons.
- Ethical budget discretion is expected.
- Ability to move 50 pounds and make repetitive movements.
- Other duties as assigned.
Must be eligible for Work Study.

- Professionalism/work ethic: Dependable, respect for others, timeliness, and trustworthiness.
- Good Oral/written communication skills including in person, meetings, emails, and phone calls.
- Basic Knowledge of Microsoft software.
- Experience with or interest in one or more of the following:
- Nutrition, Healthy Eating, Food Systems, Sustainability, Public Health, Non-Profit Administration
- Social/Behavioral Sciences including Psychology, Sociology, Education, Social Work, etc.
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people with a variety of abilities and backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College.
Ability to work with all groups from a variety of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, and with community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
Must be able to work 15 to 20 hours per week.
