Position Summary:
The Direct Consumer Lending Underwriter I is responsible for reviewing low to medium complexity files and evaluating consumer loan applications and related data/documentation to render sound credit decisions according to credit union policies, procedures and state and federal guidelines. This position communicates with branch and other Credit Union staff to gather information or to explain reasons for requirements, stipulations or decisions. Maintain quality service standards set by the organization.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyze and evaluate routine loan requests including application information, credit bureau reports, collateral evaluation, account information and any other internal or external data/documentation pertinent to making decisions in compliance with underwriting, processing policies and guidelines.
- Keep current with knowledge of the credit union’s lending updates, criteria, guidelines, procedures, policies, and processes in order to make sound lending decisions.
- Work within authority limits, seeking assistance when appropriate.
- Develop and maintain relationships with branch and other credit union employees through open and professional communication while consistently providing expected levels of service.
- Communicate with branch staff and management to gather information to make appropriate decisions.
- Provide guidance to branches and other credit union staff and clearly explain reasons for stipulating or denying the loan request. Partner with Senior Direct Consumer Lending Underwriters on loan review to maintain good loan performance and enhance independent loan review skills.
- Meet or exceed established targets/business metrics with regard to decision turn time, volume, service, quality and loan performance.
- Participate in AML/BSA compliance training as assigned. Adhere to credit union AML/BSA policy and procedures including CTR rules and form preparation, identify and refer suspicious activity to the Compliance Department, perform OFAC comparisons, and properly identify individuals in accordance with Branch Operations procedures.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Participate as needed in SDCCU car sales or other events.
- Assist Indirect Lending when needed.
- Assist in various projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Education, Experience, Skills)
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum one year related experience in consumer lending, branch or related department.
- Demonstrated ability to thoroughly analyze financial statements, credit bureau reports and other financial data and document findings.
- College level analytical skills with the ability to calculate a wide variety of lending ratios, conduct loan risk analysis and properly identify credit issues, fraud or other associated lending risks.
- Working knowledge of financial institution regulations and policies, including Reg Z, Reg B, FCRA & FACTA, and Equal Credit Opportunity Act (ECOA).
- Basic PC Skills.
- Effective written, verbal, and organizational skills.
