Undergraduate college students who are first generation and/or from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply for this opportunity to gain hands-on-experience with a small State agency focused on protecting and enhancing the San Francisco Bay. The internship program will provide students the experience to learn and build a foundational background and robust overview of San Francisco Bay coastal science, policy and management work. Interns will participate in projects that directly affect and shape San Francisco Bay, the shoreline, wetlands, and surrounding communities. Selected interns will be immersed in a wide variety of coastal and policy issues, including in environmental justice and social equity, and acquire knowledge from experienced staff and/or mentors. Additionally, interns will have opportunities to participate in multi-stakeholder events and public meetings. BCDC staff and/or mentors may provide support and assistance for effective resume-writing and interviewing tips. Selected interns may be eligible to receive credit toward college internship requirements based on their university’s criteria.
The BCDC Internship is a 10-week, paid internship that includes experiential learning, multidisciplinary collaboration, mentorship, professional development, and opportunities to work with multiple stakeholders. This internship experience will give students opportunities to be actively engaged in acquiring skills, increasing knowledge, and being exposed to what careers in coastal zone research and management can entail. Interns will have meaningful engagement with industry-leading professionals, including BCDC Commissioners, local agencies, and community leaders, and become aware of the general principles and multifaceted approaches to coastal zone management. All of the interns will work on projects and efforts related to advancing the BCDC's Strategic Plan to Protect and enhance the San Francisco Bay.

Working Conditions
BCDC’s office is our headquarters in downtown San Francisco. Under Government Code 14200, this position is a hybrid, in-office/telework position, and may be subject to change. BCDC is a hybrid workplace and offers telework for all employees in accordance with BCDC’s Telework Policy. Incumbent must live and work in California.

The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC) is a State of California government agency located in the City of San Francisco with regulatory and planning responsibilities over San Francisco Bay, the Suisun Marsh, and along the Bay Area’s nine-county shoreline. BCDC is guided in its actions by state and federal laws and its regulatory policies.
BCDC protects hundreds of miles of shoreline, collaborates with local, regional, state and federal agencies, and helps develop the San Francisco Bay Trail and the San Francisco Bay Area Water Trail. Finally, BCDC leads the Bay Area’s regional rising sea level adaptation planning.

Desirable Qualifications
- An actively enrolled rising junior or rising senior college student in good academic standing is preferred (a current GPA of 2.7 and higher is preferred, but not required).
- An individual with high potential and the desire to learn more about San Francisco Bay, climate change, shoreline conservation and development, and how governments work.
- A highly organized and motivated individual who has demonstrated creative problem-solving skills.
- The ability to research and analyze problems and make recommendations based on research and findings.
- One who can work independently and collaboratively as part of a team in both a professional physical office and/or a virtual environment.
- An individual with strong communication skills.
- Experience and/or willingness to learn how to organize, analyze, and manage large amounts of data, and how to prepare charts, tables, and reports for use by non-experts.
- Familiarity and/or general knowledge of vulnerable communities in the Bay Area and working with low-income, diverse populations.
