Company Description :

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is responsible for managing all ground transportation in the city. The SFMTA oversees public transit, paratransit, parking, traffic, walking, and taxis, with a mission to connect San Francisco through a safe, equitable, and sustainable transportation system.

Position Description :

The Director of Communications will serve as the chief communications strategist for the SFMTA, overseeing executive communication, internal communications, strategic communications, government affairs, media relations, community engagement, and marketing. This role ensures transparent, proactive messaging that aligns with the agency's mission to improve transportation access and safety for all San Franciscans.

Examples of Important and Essential Duties :

  • Strategic Communications :

Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy.

  • Build internal partnerships for customer experience goals.
  • Communicate core agency values.
  • Manage crisis communication efforts.
  • Internal Communications and Management :
  • Evaluate communication strategies.

  • Oversee internal communication efforts.
  • Manage and mentor Division staff.
  • Media and Public Relations :
  • Ensure timely responses to media inquiries.

  • Lead proactive media engagement.
  • Support relationships with media.
  • Community Engagement and Outreach :
  • Coordinate public hearings and community meetings.

  • Engage neighborhood organizations and advocacy groups.
  • Executive Communications :
  • Oversee media training for key agency staff.

  • Create opportunities for direct public communication.
  • Marketing :
  • Oversee agency-wide marketing initiatives.

  • Coordinate annual marketing plans.
  • Ensure accessibility and inclusivity in messaging.
  • Nature of Work : This is a 24-7 agency with expectations for crisis communications and media events as needed.

    Working Relationships : This position will work closely with the Director of Transportation, Board of Directors, agency staff, and various partners.

    How to qualify

    Minimum Qualifications :

  • 1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university;
  • 2. Ten (10) years of verifiable experience in public relations, communications, or media management, including three (3) years of management experience.

    Substitutions :

  • Possession of an advanced degree can substitute for one (1) year of experience.
  • Additional experience may substitute for the required degree on a year-for-year basis.

  • Desirable Qualifications :

  • Knowledge of public relations and community outreach practices.
  • Strong understanding of public transportation and policy challenges.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience overseeing staff in communications and marketing.
