Job Duties
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Demonstrate expertise in mental health and medical surgical nursing content, both clinical and didactic, and serve as a content expert in this specialty at the health sciences/nursing department.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of teaching/learning using evidence–based standards innovative teaching strategies.
- Participate in curriculum design, implementation, and evaluation; participate in developing program policies and procedures.
- Contribute to systematic program evaluation reports and self-studies.
- Collaborate with peers in creating and sustaining a supportive learning environment for students and peers.
- Demonstrate commitment to excellence in nursing education by continual professional development and scholarly activities.
- Adhere to California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) regulations and approved to teach mental health/medical surgical nursing. Participate in all ongoing departmental and select institutional activities.
- Maintain office hours; schedule may include day, evening, and weekend classes, and/or short-term classes.
- Must be engaged in culturally responsive pedagogical strategies, embrace equity, diversity, and excellence of the academic community in a culturally sensitive manner.
- Engage in participatory governance processes and activities and serve on college committees as assigned.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Possess a Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Nursing
- OR Bachelor’s in nursing AND Master’s in health education or health science
- OR the equivalent
- OR the minimum qualifications as set by the Board of Registered Nursing, whichever is higher
- Must have evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of the socio-economic, academic, cultural and ethnic diversity within the community college student population, including students for whom English is not their first language, first generation college students, and students with physical and/or learning disabilities as these factors relate to differences in learning styles.

Preferred Qualifications
- Meets minimum qualifications of the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) in mental health-medical surgical nursing.
- Experience as a registered nurse within the last five years, with at least two years providing direct patient care in Mental health-medical-surgical.
- Meets the healthcare requirements of the clinical facilities, including but not limited to current vaccinations, background check, and drug testing.
- Be approved as a nursed educator by the BRN.
- Completion of a course in teaching techniques/methods offered at an accredited institution.
- Full-time teaching experience in nursing education.
- Knowledge of test construction and evaluation measures.
- Knowledge of curriculum development, contemporary nursing practice, and national health care standards.
- Ideal candidates will have recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other racially minoritized students in the classroom, and a willingness to use culturally responsive instructional practices.
- Prior experience as a project manager or similar.
- Experience within a community college environment is preferred.
- Demonstrate excellent analytical, organization, and presentation skills.
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

Pay Philosophy
Starting salaries for Full-Time Faculty are based on a combination of experience (step) and educational (group) achievement. Initial placement is within the starting salary range and a minimum of step 5 within the applicable group. Further advancements are based on longevity and educational growth.
FT Faculty Salary Schedule
This advertised salary range is based on the contracted regular semesters (Fall and Spring). Intersessions (Winter and/or Summer), additional teaching load, and/or substitute teaching may result in increased earning potential.
