What are the responsibilities and job description for the Clarion County YMCA Lifeguard position at Scenic Rivers YMCA?
Under the supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, the lifeguard is responsible for the safety and health of all individuals in and around the pool area, maintaining the overall safety and sanitation of the swimming pool as outlined by the Pennsylvania Bathing Code. He/She is also responsible for maintaining the mission set forth by the Clarion County YMCA:

This position requires current certification in YMCA or Red Cross life guarding, Professional Red Cross or American Heart Association Level C CPR, and First Aid. This position also requires having Act 33 and Act 34 Clearances.
- Ensure the highest quality of member service and safety in pool area. Move about the pool area every 5 minutes.
- Report for duty at least 5 minutes prior to start in proper uniform: bathing suit, YMCA staff shirt, solid color shorts and whistle.
- Maintain acceptable appearance at all times. Wear approved life guard apparel at all times.
- Prevent accidents through the use of preventive guarding techniques.
- Know the location and proper use of all emergency equipment.
- Know all established emergency procedures and review these regularly.
- Perform proper rescues when necessary.
- Test the Chlorine and PH levels for the pool at specified times and record the results on the daily sheet.
- Maintain the daily record sheet: attendance, chemical testing and any problems with equipment on this sheet.
- Keep pool and instructional equipment in good repair and in its proper place, log any deficiencies on daily sheet and inform Aquatic Director.
- Inspect the First Aid Kit regularly and log any items that need replaced.
- Responsible for keeping certifications current.
- Assist in any area of the pool as requested by the Aquatic Director.
- Be professional, alert, courteous, and diplomatic. When you interact with patrons, follow the four YMCA values: caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
- Avoid socializing while on duty.
- Scan your area at all times.
- Clear all swimmers from the water during an electrical storm.
- Keep the swimming area clean and ready for inspection at all time.
- Secure the area by locking all doors when a lifeguard is not on duty.
- No cell phones on deck.
- Watch for child abuse.
