Position Summary:
Schafer Industries is currently seeking a 1st Shift Calibration Technician for its Schafer Gear Works operation in South Bend, IN. This position reports to the Quality Assurance Manager.

Perform activities related to the maintenance, development, and documentation of SGW’s Calibration system.
Essential Functions:
Complete the following on all gages prior to calibration activities by:
- Inspecting gages for cleanliness, damage, excessive wear, restricted movement, or unusual “play” (loose) in the gage.
- Cleaning all surfaces and moving parts (i.e. thimbles, slides, locking screws, etc.).
- Oiling moving parts as needed. (Do not oil Digimatic scales!)
- Wiping down measuring surfaces with cloth (lint-free preferred).
- Noting general condition of gage:
- Good - no evidence of damage, wear, or restricted movement;
- OK - some wear or restricted movement;
- Poor - evidence of damage, excessive wear, chipped parts, etc.
- Repairing, maintaining, and ordering gages as needed.
including receiving inspection, final inspection and lab inspection by:
- Collecting dimensional and visual data and recording on the appropriate documents.
- Presenting any test or gage nonconformance to A.Q. Manager for review and disposition.
- Maintaining the calibration of equipment used throughout SGW including the coordination of outside calibration services.
- Maintaining a record of calibration via the recall calibration program.
- Gage Control:
- Organizing gage storage
- Maintaining gage status – working order, active, in-active, requiring repair, etc.
- Setting up records to track gage location, use, status, etc.
- Calibration Control:
- Determining/following interval schedules for gage calibrations.
- Checking gages for accuracy and functionality.
- Preparing and sending gages to outside calibration sources.
- Keeping accurate records of performed calibrations.
- Records Control:
- Creating and maintaining electronic calibration records for in-house and outside calibration sources.
- Tracking gage use, location, and calibration through the computer program “Calibration Recall 3”
- Creating “out of tolerance gage reports” for gages not meeting specified tolerances and functionality.
results of said activities by:
- Checking the capability of the gage.
- Maintaining the 6S program in assigned area.
- Channeling problems and/or complaints to appropriate person for resolution.
- Following procedures & work instructions for calibration related activities, including the development, review, and monitoring of these documents.
- Reporting the status or needs associated with the calibration function to the Q. A Manager.
- Gear Metrology and Nomenclature.
- Ability to read and interpret prints, schematics, and procedures for the inspection of outgoing materials
- Ability to accurately and effectively collect and interpret accumulated data from various inspection
- Ability to complete appropriate documents, such as GR&G’s, Calibration stickers, & Attribute Gage
- Ability to maintain and organize accurate files relating to all facets of calibration.
- Ability to read and interpret lead and involute charts off of the Gear checking machines.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and two plus years of experience.
- Must be able to communicate in English.
- Ability to use a computer
