TRIO Talent Search (TS) of the University of South Dakota has an immediate opening for a full time 10-month position of advisor in Pine Ridge, SD for the Pine Ridge High School and Bennett County Schools grades 6-12 in the towns of Pine Ridge and Martin, SD. This position assists school-age TS participants in the identification, preparation, and attainment of their educational goals. The goals of the program include that TS participants finish high school in the standard four years, graduate, and enroll in postsecondary education the following fall.The TS advisor will:Maintain a cooperative relationship with the target schools (Pine Ridge High School and Bennett County School) and the communities of Pine Ridge and Martin, SD through visits with students and collaboration with the schools, staff, and parents.Meet with TS participants each week in class, small group meetings, and/or individual visits.Plan and carry out activities designed to help students succeed in school, graduate from high school, and enroll in postsecondary education.Provide academic assistance including study skills and goal setting activities and encourage, conduct, or arrange tutoring as needed.Collect and disseminate information regarding postsecondary institutions, student financial aid, admissions, housing, and academic assistance programs.Arrange and conduct campus visits to colleges for TRIO TS participants.Be available to meet with students' parents through letters, personal visits, parent teacher conferences or other activities.Maintain a record keeping system including student files to document student assistance and all professional activity.Qualifications of Advisor:Education: Bachelor’s degree in education, social services, counseling, business administration or related field or equivalent experience and close to obtaining such a degree is preferred.Valid SD teacher certification and/or a SD counseling certification preferred.Two years previous work with students from disadvantaged backgrounds preferred.Other Skills and abilities:Knowledge of Native American, disadvantaged students and challenges faced by the target population.Knowledge of secondary and postsecondary education requirements, and the ability to apply education models and good teaching practices in the classroom.The ability to relate to middle school, secondary, postsecondary students, and adults.Good communication skills/ a friendly, personable demeanor.Valid driver's license.Good technology skills.
