What are the responsibilities and job description for the Teen Librarian position at Shaker Heights Public Library?
Pay Information: SHPL typically hires new staff in at the entry rate of the posted pay scale. Exceptions may be made for successful applicants who have significant (5 years) direct experience in the position at a level beyond what is expected of a new hire.
Job Summary: The Teen Librarian provides reference, readers advisory, and programming services to customers in grades 7-12 and their families, assists customers in locating, selecting and reserving library materials, develops and maintains the librarys young adult collection, and develops teen engagement programming.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Engages with teen population throughout the library to build long lasting relationships and stimulate fun and growth. Coordinates the services of the teen center.
- Plans, prepares, conducts and promotes programs, classes and special events.
- Assists faculty and staff of Shaker Heights Middle and High Schools with library materials and services.
- Assists with children's services.
- Serves as Senior Person of department or building, as assigned.
- Maintains knowledge of available materials and customer reading preferences.
- Promotes collection through various means such as booklists, newsletters, programming, and displays.
- Responds to customer questions in person, by phone, and electronically.
- Performs community outreach activities.
- Develops and maintains an assigned area of the department's collection, including selection, weeding, repair and replacement using provided tools.
- Works within the collection budget for assigned area.
- Actively Supports the strategic plan, mission, vision, and values of the library.
- Represents and applies policies and procedures, including the Code of Conduct, to the public.
- Performs other duties as assigned
This role requires successful candidates to be able to move around multiple floors of the library frequently
Education:
Master's Degree in Library Science from an American Library Associate accredited school
Experience and Competencies:
- Experience working with children and young adults in grades 7-12
- Ability to provide excellent customer service even in stressful situations
- Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of audiences using a variety of methods
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Competent in Microsoft Office programs
- Knowledge of the Dewy Decimal Classification system
- Ability to multi-task
- Ability to interact appropriately and effectively with customers of all ages and backgrounds
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including days, evenings, and weekends
