The Corrections Shift Commander (Lieutenant) oversees and manages all operations during a correctional shift. This role carries ultimate responsibility for ensuring the safety, security, and overall wellbeing of inmates, as well as the safety of staff, visiting professionals, and members of the public. Duties of the Corrections Shift Commander may include but are not limited to:
Maintaining cleanliness in the facilities.
Ensuring the proper segregation of inmates is maintained.
Reviewing inmate conduct and Correctional Officer reports.
Maintaining discipline within the workgroup, including the investigation of possible misconduct and applying progressive discipline when warranted.
Supervises and participate in all corrections service emergency operational plans.
Responsible for supervising the activities of Corrections Supervisors and Correctional Officers.
Responsible for the day to day on the job training and education of subordinates.
Motivation of subordinates.
Set personal examples for subordinates.
Research laws, ordinances, policies, rules and regulations to insure correctness of shift operations.
Conduct inspections of subordinates personal appearance and equipment.
Responsible for the maintenance of work schedules, which includes time off records.
Ensures all Division goals, objectives and directives are followed.
Assists the public at the reception counter and handles complaints as applicable.
Maintains records and reports as required by the Corrections Administrator.
High school diploma or equivalent.
A minimum of three years’ experience as a Correctional Supervisor with the Department.
Self-motivated with the ability to effectively, efficiently and entirely complete assignments with minimal supervision.
Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Ability to accept and dispense supervision.
Ability to effectively manage others in a wide range of circumstances.
Ability to effectively communicate in verbal and written form.
Ability to deal effectively with the press, the district attorney’s office, and the public.
Ability to work effectively under stressful situations.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and good working relationships with co-workers and other staff.
Ability to maintain regular and predictable work attendance.
Salary : $35 - $40
