Job Summary:
Sheridan is seeking a skilled Bindery Operator 3 to join our team. In this role, you will be responsible for operating and maintaining a variety of auxiliary binding machines, ensuring the safe and efficient production of high-quality printed materials. You will oversee equipment used in the binding and finishing process, including tasks such as adjusting settings, coordinating production flow, and troubleshooting technical issues. This position offers an opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, contributing to the creation of books, catalogs, manuals, directories, and magazines.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Operate a range of auxiliary binding machines with multiple cutting heads and control surfaces to transform printed sheets into final products.
- Inspect equipment for safety concerns and ensure safe operation in compliance with safety protocols.
- Operate automatic adhesive binding machines (perfect binders) featuring interconnected process stations for tasks such as vibrating, milling, roughening, gluing, covering, and stacking completed products.
- Adjust and synchronize multiple workstations on a single machine to maintain production flow and quality.
- Direct a team of operators, ensuring smooth production processes while maintaining quality, output, and productivity.
- Monitor and assess machine performance, identifying areas for improvement or troubleshooting when needed.
- Maintain and adjust bindery equipment, including folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, and binding/gluing machines, using standard and specialized tools.
- Perform necessary adjustments to machine settings based on job specifications, including working with various paper weights, sizes, and types.
- Communicate effectively with team members to ensure that all production goals and deadlines are met.
Basic Qualifications:
- Strong knowledge of setup, adjustment, procedures, and capabilities of bindery equipment for folding, collating, and cutting printed materials.
- Familiarity with various paper weights, sizes, and types, including the ability to identify issues such as excessive moisture or curling that may require machine adjustments.
- Basic mathematical skills (decimals, metric units) for interpreting job orders and making precise adjustments.
- Proficient in using standard and specialized tools to maintain the accuracy and operational efficiency of bindery machines.
- Experience making adjustments to powered machines using hand tools (e.g., wrenches, screwdrivers, punches, knives) and specialized tools provided by manufacturers.
- Knowledge of operating procedures for bindery equipment such as folders, cutters, collators, stitchers, drills, and binding/gluing machines.
- Ability to read and interpret instructions regarding machine operations and dimensional accuracy.
Desired Skills and Abilities:
- Previous industry experience required.
Physical Requirements:
- Physical ability to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and up to 10 pounds frequently, with minimal constant force.
- Ability to stand for long periods in a fast-paced, manufacturing environment.
Hours and Compensation:
- Hours: This position requires full-time availability with shifts from Monday through Friday. The shifts available are:
- First shift: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM
- Second shift: 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM
- Third shift: 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM
- Training may be conducted on a different shift than the one you were hired for. Occasional overtime may be required based on production needs.
- Compensation: Compensation for this position is competitive and based on experience. Benefits include healthcare, retirement plans, paid time off, paid holidays and referral bonuses. The exact pay rate will be discussed during the interview process.
