As a full-time Paralegal/Legal Administrative Assistant in our Real Estate & Development Service Line, you will work on all aspects of real estate closings such as reviewing contracts, reviewing and preparing title insurance commitments/policies from abstract title documents, updating title and recording documents, disbursing files, and communicating with all parties to the transaction. The ideal candidate will have 3 years of real estate administrative experience and demonstrate a willingness to learn and assist in overall production of closing. While a paralegal certification from an ABA-approved program is preferred, it is not required.
This position will work in-person at our Charleston, South Carolina office.

Job Classification:
Reports and is responsible to the Real Estate Department Chair and attorneys within the department.
Essential Duties:
- Draft purchase and sale agreements, deeds, affidavits, notes, mortgages, UCC financing statements, easements and other related real estate documents in preparation for closings
- Review purchase and sale agreements for preparation of time schedules and closing checklists
- Facilitate, track, and satisfy due diligence requirements for seller and purchaser clients
- Consult with title companies, survey firms, property inspectors and environmental consultants
- Contact various governmental offices to obtain information, including real estate ownership, taxes and zoning
- Conduct public record searches
- Review and summarize title commitments, title policies, lien search reports, inspection reports, surveys and phase one environmental reports
- Facilitate details of closing transactions with various parties to ensure documents are organized, complete and accurate
- Coordinate, attend and assist with closings
- Review and prepare closing statements
- Coordinate recording and filing documents in state and local offices
- Prepare closing binders
- Review, summarize and prepare leases
- Assist with the review of loan documents
- Keep clients, agents, and lenders informed of status of transaction(s)
- Process executed closing documents and send loan documents to lender in compliance with their policies and deadlines
- Disburse funds via wire transmittals or checks
- Reconcile invoices and verify payee information and mailing addresses
- Request and review post-closing title updates
- Verify all document recording and record documents with the Register of Deeds (both electronic & manually)
- Reconcile disbursed checks and follow up on any outstanding/unclaimed funds
- Process and record mortgage satisfactions
Other Responsibilities:
- Prepare corporate filings
- Prepare corporate resolutions
- Complete all other assignments as required

Education, Experience and Skills Required:
- 3-5 years of experience with real estate law
- Strong understanding of real estate terms and technological skills including but not limited to: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Qualia
- Superior research skills, including the use of online services, databases and the Internet
- Superior organizational skills
- Project and case management skills including a strong aptitude for managing and prioritizing multiple projects and deadlines
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills as well as analytical, problem solving and decision making skills
- Ability to work independently and maintain a high degree of confidentiality
Physical Requirements:
- Sitting frequently, six out of eight hours per day
- Sitting position static for up to one-half hour at a time
- Lifting and carrying up to 20 pounds occasionally, up to one hour per day
- Bending and stooping occasionally, up to one-half hour per day
