The Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George
Who We Are
The Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George are a Franciscan religious congregation founded in Germany in 1869 and arrived in the U.S. in 1923. We are Sisters who are consecrated to God through the vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, and we live in community.
Why We Exist
The Lord has called each of our Sisters, and our community as a whole, “to make Christ’s merciful love visible” in the world and in our day. We do this first by receiving His love and mercy in our own lives, and, through the Holy Spirit, allowing His love and mercy to flow to those we encounter, including each other and those we serve.
What We Do
In the spirit, and after the example, of our founder, St. Francis and our foundress, Mother M. Anselma, “it is our special mission to be simply ready in obedience to God’s call, in accordance with the signs of the times, to see what is needed in our service of Christ: in our Congregation, among children, youth, the aged, the sick, the poor and needy of every condition.”
Generally speaking, this mission has led our Sisters into the following areas of apostolic work: healthcare, education, youth ministry, domestic work in support of the clergy, service in dioceses, and positions which support our own Sisters in the congregation.
Our Mission Partners
Our employees play a very important role helping ensure our Sisters’ needs are met so that we may be free to live, pray, serve, and fulfill the mission God has given us. Because the work of our employees allows us to serve in the mission entrusted to us by Christ and His Church, we proudly refer to them as “Mission Partners.”
